The B4 is Volvo's mild-hybrid evolution of the D4 diesel, introduced in 2020 as part of the wider B-engine refresh on the SPA platform. It pairs the 2.0-litre VEA four-cylinder diesel with a 48V belt-driven integrated starter generator and small lithium-ion battery in the boot, plus an Aisin AWF8G55 eight-speed automatic. Output is 197 hp and 420 Nm, available in FWD or AWD. The diesel B4 was discontinued in most European markets by 2024 as Volvo phased out diesels.· more· less

Refined diesel with strong torque Excellent safety credentials
48V system charging faults EGR and DPF concerns on short trips
Buy if: You drive longer-distance regularly and want a safe, torquey diesel SUV with full Volvo service history and all recall work confirmed completed.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips (EGR/DPF clogging) or you find a car showing the 12V critical charging fault message that has not been resolved.

Common Problems
Solid platform but 48V system adds new failure modes
The B4 carries over the strengths and weaknesses of the SPA platform: comfortable, refined, safe, but with a long list of small electrical and infotainment niggles. The 48V mild-hybrid kit adds genuine new failure modes (12V critical charging faults, integrated starter generator, DC/DC converter) on top of the existing VEA diesel EGR and DPF concerns. Most issues are not catastrophic, but resolving them at a Volvo dealer is expensive. A car with full Volvo service history, completed recall work, and recent battery health checks is a much safer buy than a high-mileage example with patchy records.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooling circuit fire risk (some 2.0 VEA diesels, 2014-2019, extended to early B-engine cars) Critical - verify completed
Power tailgate lift arm separation in cold (R89910, 2018-2019, some 2020) Verify completed
Autonomous Emergency Braking software fault (2019-2020) Verify completed
Front wiper motor water ingress (2018-2020) Verify completed
Low pressure fuel pump fuse failure (2019-2020 diesel) Verify completed
Rear axle bolt torque (Sep 2018 - Apr 2019) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooling circuit recall is the most safety-critical due to engine-bay fire risk.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years EU) Expired on most B4 Mk2 cars
12V battery warranty Typically 2 years, expired
48V battery warranty Check with Volvo, often 8 years
Rust perforation 12 years from first registration
Extended warranty (Volvo Selekt) Available on approved used cars
Most B4 Mk2 cars are now outside the standard 2-year EU factory warranty. The 48V hybrid battery may still be covered under an extended hybrid component warranty. Volvo Selekt approved used cars come with their own warranty period and should be checked individually.
