Volvo's elegant executive saloon and the first car on the new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform alongside the XC90. Powered by the 190 hp D4204T14 twin-turbo diesel driving the front wheels through an 8-speed Aisin automatic. Comfortable and refined, with a strong safety reputation, but reliability in the executive class is well below BMW and Audi rivals - What Car? ranks the S90 22nd of 23 in its segment. Several major recalls affect 2016-2018 cars, including the well-known plastic intake manifold fire risk.· more· less

Common Problems
Recall-heavy and below average for the class
The S90 D4 is a comfortable, well-equipped cruiser, but its reliability record is well below BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. Multiple safety recalls affect 2016-2018 cars, the intake manifold fire recall being the most critical. The D4 engine and Aisin gearbox are fundamentally robust, but the surrounding emissions hardware, Sensus electronics, and optional air suspension are common pain points. Buy a well-maintained, fully recalled example with highway-biased history and avoid heavily optioned air-suspension cars without specialist inspection.
