Volvo's only production V8 engine, co-developed with Yamaha, made the first-generation XC90 the quickest seven-seat SUV of its era. The 4.4-litre B8444S uses an unusual 60-degree bank angle to fit transversely, which creates tight engine bay packaging and high labor costs for most repairs. Production numbers were modest, especially in Europe, so specialist knowledge and parts availability can be limited.· more· less

Unique Yamaha V8 character Strong towing and performance
Engine-out labor for many repairs Very high fuel consumption
Buy if: You want a distinctive V8 SUV with Volvo safety, can verify the balance shaft drain hole fix (2006+), and accept high fuel and maintenance costs.
Avoid if: You need affordable running costs, cannot confirm the engine serial number is post-6833, or want easy access to specialist expertise.

Common Problems
Complex and costly when things fail, but post-2006 engines are reasonably durable
The B8444S V8 is mechanically capable and can reach high mileages with diligent maintenance, but the transverse installation in the XC90 makes nearly every repair more expensive than it would be in a conventional layout. The balance shaft bearing issue on pre-2006 engines is the most critical concern. Post-2006 models with the drain hole fix are significantly safer. The alternator, oil leaks, and angle gear are the most common ongoing maintenance items. Budget for specialist labor and keep transmission fluid fresh.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Engine mount bolts incorrect (2008 V8 models, limited production run of approximately 102 vehicles) Verify completed
Balance shaft bearing water ingress (2005 engines with serial below 6833, TSB for drain hole drilling) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2005-2011, affecting various production dates) Verify completed
Fuel pump relay failure (various 2005-2012 models) Verify if applicable
Contact Volvo with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The balance shaft TSB is particularly critical for 2005 and early 2006 models. Volvo's online recall lookup tool can check by VIN for European-market vehicles.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all XC90 V8 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all 2005-2011 models
Extended warranty availability Not typically available for vehicles this age
All XC90 V8 models are well outside their original 2-year Volvo factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty products are generally not available for vehicles of this age. Budget for self-insured repairs.
