The second-generation V70 on the P2 platform was Volvo's workhorse estate, combining Scandinavian build quality with generous interior space. The T5 variant uses the 2.3-litre turbocharged five-cylinder (B5234T3/T7) producing 200-250 hp depending on the version, paired with either a 5-speed manual or the Aisin AW55-50SN automatic. A capable long-distance cruiser that still has a strong following among enthusiasts and families who value practicality and safety.· more· less

Common Problems
Strong engine, but PCV system, electrics, and transmission need attention
The B5234T five-cylinder turbo is one of Volvo's most durable engines, regularly exceeding 300,000 km with proper care. However, the PCV system, engine mounts, and front suspension bushings will need attention on virtually every example. Cars with the AW55-50SN automatic require documented transmission fluid changes to avoid expensive valve body repairs. Early models (1999-2002) have the added ETM concern. The P2 platform's electrical architecture (ABS module, CEM, DIM) is the most persistent ownership headache. Manual gearbox examples with full service history represent the lowest-risk ownership proposition.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Driver airbag inflator degradation risk (2001-2007, ZF-manufactured inflator) Critical - verify completed

ETM extended warranty campaign (1999-2002 turbo models, 10 years / 200,000 km) Verify if applicable
Electric cooling fan overheating risk (certain production periods) Verify completed
The driver airbag inflator recall (ZF-manufactured, not Takata) is the most critical safety recall for P2 models. The ETM campaign is relevant for 1999-2002 models but the extended warranty period has expired on all cars. Contact Volvo with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all P2 V70 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models
Extended warranty Third-party options only
All Volvo V70 P2 T5 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Volvo's 12-year rust perforation warranty has also expired on all examples. Third-party extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, as turbo and transmission failures on older turbocharged models are often excluded.
