Volvo's mid-size sedan on the P3 platform with the smooth 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six (SI6) producing 300 hp in standard form or 325 hp in R-Design trim. All T6 models came with the Haldex-based AWD system and the 6-speed Aisin TF-80SC automatic. The SI6 engine is widely regarded as one of Volvo's best powerplants, and many reach 250,000+ km without major engine work. It was discontinued after 2015 as Volvo moved to four-cylinder Drive-E engines for all models.· more· less

Smooth, powerful inline-six engine Timing chain, no belt replacement
Pre-2013 piston rings burn oil Haldex AWD adds maintenance cost
Buy if: You want a refined six-cylinder Volvo sedan with AWD and can find a 2013+ model with complete service history.
Avoid if: You want low running costs. The thirsty 3.0-litre six-cylinder, premium fuel requirement, and AWD system mean higher ownership costs than four-cylinder alternatives.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but six-cylinder and AWD complexity add cost
The SI6 3.0-litre inline-six is one of Volvo's most reliable engines. Cars from 2013 onwards with revised piston rings are particularly dependable, and many reach 250,000+ km without major engine work. The timing chain eliminates the belt replacement that five-cylinder Volvos require. However, the six cylinders mean more ignition coils and spark plugs to service, the Haldex AWD system requires dedicated maintenance, and the PCV and valve cover will need attention as the car ages. Pre-2013 cars carry a meaningful oil consumption risk. Overall, a well-maintained T6 is a reliable ownership proposition, but expect higher consumable and maintenance costs than four-cylinder alternatives.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front seatbelt anchor cable fatigue (2011-2018 S60) Critical - verify completed
Door latch mechanism failure allowing doors to open unexpectedly (2011-2017 S60) Verify completed
CEM software issue causing windshield wiper malfunction (2014 S60) Verify completed
Low oil pressure warning system malfunction (2011-2012 S60 with 5-cyl only) Verify if applicable
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The seatbelt cable recall is particularly important as it affects occupant safety in a collision. The door latch recall affects all four doors and can cause doors to open during driving, especially in hot weather.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all P3 T6 models
Corrosion perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014-2015 models; covers rust-through only
Extended warranty availability Available through Volvo dealers and third-party providers
All P3 S60 T6 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year corrosion perforation warranty may still cover 2014-2015 cars for rust-through damage, but surface corrosion and paint bubbling are excluded. Extended warranty coverage is available from Volvo dealers and independent warranty providers, though pre-existing conditions will not be covered.
