Engines built before mid-2012 (B6304T2 and early B6304T4) used piston rings with small oil drain holes that become blocked by carbon deposits over time. This causes progressive oil consumption, starting with slightly elevated use (0.5L per 3,000 km) and potentially escalating to 1L per 1,000 km. Symptoms include low oil warnings between services, blue exhaust smoke on cold starts, and fouled spark plugs. Volvo redesigned the pistons and rings from late 2012 production with larger drain holes that resist clogging. For pre-2013 cars, the repair involves replacing pistons and rings, costing approximately 2,500-3,500 euros including labor. Cars from 2013 onwards with the revised rings are much less susceptible. When evaluating a purchase, check oil level carefully and ask the seller about oil consumption between services. Many post-revision engines run 200,000+ km without measurable consumption.

The T6 3.0 engine's PCV system uses a diaphragm that tears with age and heat exposure. Unlike older Volvo PCV systems that build excess pressure when they fail, the T6 PCV failure creates excessive vacuum in the crankcase. Symptoms include a hissing or whistling noise at idle, rough running, and potentially a check engine light. On the SI6, the PCV unit sits on top of the engine and is reasonably accessible. The diaphragm, spring, and cover can often be purchased separately rather than replacing the entire oil trap assembly, keeping parts costs around 50-100 euros. The SI6 engine uses anaerobic sealant (rather than a traditional gasket) to seal the valve cover to the cylinder head. This sealant degrades over time from heat cycling, and oil begins to weep from the joint. If left unaddressed, oil can migrate into the spark plug wells, causing misfires and accelerated ignition coil degradation. The repair involves removing the valve cover, cleaning the mating surfaces, and resealing with fresh sealant. On the P3 platform, access is reasonable with most work done from underneath after removing the splash shield. Expect 400-800 euros depending on whether it is done at an independent shop or Volvo dealer.

The SI6 engine's water pump and thermostat housing (which uses a plastic housing with O-rings) are known to develop leaks as they age. The thermostat housing in particular can crack or its O-rings can deteriorate, causing coolant loss. The water pump itself can also fail, though less commonly than the housing. Symptoms include coolant level dropping, overheating warnings, or poor cabin heating. Parts and labor run 600-1,200 euros depending on whether just the thermostat housing or the full water pump assembly is replaced. Many specialists recommend replacing both components together when one fails, as the labor overlap is significant.

The six-cylinder engine is particularly hard on ignition coils. Heat from the engine bay causes the coil boots to crack or melt over time, leading to misfires and rough running. A clogged PCV system can worsen this by forcing oil past seals into the spark plug wells, damaging coil boots. Individual coil replacement costs around 40-70 euros per coil for aftermarket parts. Many owners and specialists recommend replacing all six coils and spark plugs simultaneously as a preventive measure, costing 300-700 euros with labor. Replacing spark plugs on schedule (every 80,000 km) helps extend coil life.

The Haldex-based AWD system uses a DEM (Differential Electronic Module) pump and oil filter that require periodic servicing. When the filter becomes clogged with clutch material or the pump wears out, you get dashboard warnings ('Anti-skid service required' or 'AWD malfunction') and the rear axle stops receiving power. The filter can clog as early as 80,000 km if the system was not serviced on schedule. Pump replacement costs approximately 500-800 euros at an independent specialist, potentially up to 1,200 euros at a Volvo dealer.
