Entry-level diesel in Volvo's first-generation mid-size SUV. The D3 badge covered two different engines: a 5-cylinder D5204T (2010-2013, 136-163 hp) and a 4-cylinder VEA D4204T (2014-2017, 150 hp). Both are reasonably sturdy but require regular longer drives to keep the DPF healthy. The automatic Aisin TF-80SC gearbox needs its oil changed despite Volvo's lifetime-fill claim.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable with proper maintenance but needs regular highway driving
The XC60 D3 is a reasonably dependable mid-size SUV when maintained correctly and driven regularly on longer journeys. The main vulnerabilities are shared with most modern diesels: DPF clogging from short trips and EGR carbon buildup. The 2014+ VEA engines have the serious inlet manifold recall that must be verified as completed. The automatic gearbox benefits greatly from regular fluid changes despite Volvo's lifetime-fill claim. Cars with full service history and motorway-biased usage profiles are significantly less likely to develop expensive problems.
