Volvo's compact premium hatchback, competing with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes A-Class. The T4 was offered with two distinct engine families: a 1.6-litre Ford-sourced turbo (2012-2015) and Volvo's own 2.0-litre VEA unit (2015-2019). Both deliver around 180-190 hp with good refinement. Strong safety credentials including standard City Safety autonomous braking and a well-finished Scandinavian interior make it a distinctive alternative to German rivals.· more· less

Common Problems
Engine variant matters more than anything else
The V40 T4's reliability depends heavily on which engine and gearbox combination you buy. The 1.6 B4164T with manual gearbox is reasonably dependable, but the same engine with Powershift automatic adds significant gearbox risk. The 2.0 VEA engine from late 2016 onward (revised pistons) is the best combination, while early 2015-2016 VEA units carry oil consumption risk. Platform-wide issues like door locks, shock absorbers, and coil springs affect all variants. With a well-chosen example and proper maintenance, annual repair costs stay manageable.
