The second-generation XC90 re-established Volvo as a premium SUV contender with strong safety, Scandinavian design, and a 7-seat layout. The T5 is the entry-level petrol engine using Volvo's 2.0-litre four-cylinder VEA unit with a single turbocharger, producing 254 hp and paired exclusively with an 8-speed Aisin automatic and AWD. Compared to the T6 and T8 variants, it trades outright performance for slightly lower complexity, though it shares the SPA platform's known weak points.· more· less

AC evaporator failures are expensive Heavy brake and tire consumption
Buy if: You want a spacious, safe premium 7-seater petrol SUV and can budget for the SPA platform's known AC and brake weak spots.
Avoid if: You need low running costs or cannot tolerate an AC evaporator repair that requires full dashboard removal.

Common Problems
Solid engine, but SPA platform has expensive weak spots
The T5 VEA petrol engine is mechanically robust and avoids the diesel-specific issues (DPF, EGR, PowerPulse) of the D5 variant. High-mileage examples beyond 200,000 km exist with proper maintenance. However, the SPA platform brings its own challenges: the AC evaporator is the most expensive potential repair due to dashboard removal labor, the Sensus infotainment can be temperamental on early cars, and the XC90's weight accelerates brake and tire wear. Cars with the optional air suspension and panoramic sunroof carry additional risk. The 2018+ model year brought improved infotainment hardware, and 2017+ engines have the updated piston rings.

Third-row seat belt retractor pretensioner (2017 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The coolant bleeder hose and fuel hose recalls on 2015-2016 models are particularly important due to fire risk. The AEB software recall affects all models produced from January 2019.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used examples
Air suspension quality bulletin Extended to 7 years from delivery in some markets (check eligibility)
Extended warranty (Volvo Selekt) Available on approved used cars through Volvo dealers
All used XC90 T5 models are outside their original 2-year Volvo factory warranty. If the car has rear air suspension, check whether Volvo's extended quality bulletin coverage still applies based on the delivery date. Volvo Selekt certified pre-owned vehicles come with an additional warranty. The piston ring issue on 2015-2016 models was handled through goodwill programs, not a formal recall.
