Volvo's first V60 combined a sportier estate silhouette with the brand's safety reputation. The D5 variant pairs the proven 2.4-litre five-cylinder diesel with sequential twin turbochargers, AWD, and the Aisin TF-80SC six-speed automatic. With 205-215 hp and 420-440 Nm, it was the most powerful diesel in the V60 range. The five-cylinder engine has a strong reputation for longevity when maintained, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. Service costs are moderate for a premium diesel estate, though injector and turbo repairs are more expensive than on simpler four-cylinder competitors.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engine, but gearbox and emissions system need attention
The five-cylinder D5 engine is one of Volvo's most durable diesel units, with many examples reaching 300,000 km and beyond when properly maintained. The main ownership concerns center on the TF-80SC automatic gearbox (valve body wear from neglected fluid changes), the emissions system (EGR and DPF on short-trip cars), and the cost of replacing five injectors rather than four. The Haldex AWD system also requires proactive fluid changes that are not in the standard service schedule. Cars with complete service history and evidence of gearbox fluid changes are significantly less likely to develop expensive issues.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Coolant bleeder hose leak and fire risk (built July 2010 - April 2015) Critical - verify completed
Seat belt anchor cable fatigue (2011-2018 S60/V60) Verify completed
Brake booster vacuum line chafing on wiper mechanism (2012-2013) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (various build dates) Verify with VIN
Contact Volvo with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The coolant bleeder hose recall is particularly important for pre-2015 cars as it addresses a fire risk.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all V60 D5 Mk1 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
Extended warranty availability Available through Volvo dealers and third-party providers
All V60 D5 Mk1 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Volvo's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on later models. Third-party extended warranties are available but check exclusions for turbo, gearbox, and emission system components carefully.
