The second-generation V60 D4 brought Volvo's SPA platform and the 190 hp 2.0-litre VEA diesel to the mid-size estate segment, competing with the BMW 320d Touring, Audi A4 Avant TDI, and Mercedes C220d Estate. It was Volvo's mainstream diesel offering until production ended in March 2024 as the brand phased out diesel. The D4 retains the comfortable cabin and strong safety credentials of the petrol V60, with diesel torque and economy that suit longer-distance drivers.· more· less

Strong torque and motorway economy Refined VEA diesel after 2015 fix
EGR/inlet manifold fire recall risk Sensus infotainment can be glitchy
Buy if: You drive longer distances regularly, want diesel torque in a comfortable estate, and can verify all recalls (especially the EGR fire recall) have been completed.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips that risk DPF clogging, or want low-complexity ownership without AdBlue/EGR/DPF maintenance concerns.

Common Problems
Capable diesel estate but watch the recalls and short-trip pattern
The V60 D4 Mk2 is a comfortable, refined diesel estate, and the post-2015 VEA engine resolved earlier oil consumption issues. However, the D4 carries the typical modern diesel risk stack: EGR/intake manifold (with a major fire-risk recall), DPF clogging on short trips, AdBlue/SCR maintenance, and turbo wear by 100,000-150,000 km. Combined with the Sensus instability common to all SPA-platform Volvos, ownership costs run higher than the petrol T4 sister. Verify all recalls via VIN, prefer cars with motorway-heavy use history, and avoid as a city-only car.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler / intake manifold fire risk on 2.0-litre diesel (2014-2019 production, Recall 29948) Critical - verify completed
Low-pressure fuel pump fuse failure causing engine stall (2019-2020 models, R10100) Verify completed
AEB software may not detect obstacles (2019-2020 models, R29998) Verify completed
Rear suspension toe link lock nuts not properly tightened (Sept 2018-April 2019 production, R19938) Verify completed
SRS airbag control unit may detach in crash (12-day production window in 2021, R10068) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR/intake manifold fire-risk recall (29948) is the most critical and should be confirmed before purchase, followed by the fuel pump fuse recall (R10100) for 2019-2020 cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 2018-2024 D4 models
Timing belt interval Every 10 years or 150,000 km - check service record
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be active until 2030-2036 depending on production year
Volvo extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers, recommended for out-of-warranty ownership
All V60 D4 Mk2 models are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply on later production cars. An extended warranty is worth considering given the diesel-specific risk stack (EGR, DPF, AdBlue, turbo) and Volvo's higher-than-average labor rates.
