Volvo's rugged estate built on the SPA platform, combining wagon practicality with raised ride height and standard all-wheel drive. The D5 PowerPulse uses twin turbochargers and a compressed-air injection system to virtually eliminate turbo lag, delivering 235 hp and 480 Nm through an 8-speed Aisin automatic. Production of the diesel ended in 2021 as Volvo transitioned the lineup to mild hybrids and electrification. Strong torque, relaxed motorway manners, and a well-equipped cabin define the ownership experience.· more· less

Common Problems
Capable all-weather estate with PowerPulse and air suspension to monitor
The V90 Cross Country D5 shares the VEA D5 engine's known vulnerabilities: the PowerPulse hose is a common but cheap fix, EGR and AdBlue maintenance is typical of modern Euro 6 diesels, and twin-turbo failures are rare but expensive. The standard air suspension adds another wear point that the regular V90 doesn't have. Cars used primarily for motorway cruising fare significantly better than those restricted to urban driving. The Aisin 8-speed gearbox is generally solid but benefits from fluid changes every 80,000 km despite being marketed as maintenance-free.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Emergency call system software sending incorrect location (Sept 2016 - Oct 2018 production) Verify completed
SRS control unit not properly attached to body (Apr 2018 - Aug 2020 production) Verify completed
Curtain airbag retaining bolt failure risk (Nov 2016 - Mar 2017 production) Verify completed
Low-pressure fuel pump fuse failure causing engine stall (2019-2020 models) Verify completed
Hydraulic brake unit welding defect affecting brake boost (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake unit and fuel pump recalls are safety-critical. Early production V90 Cross Country units (2017) had the most recall activity.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used V90 Cross Country D5s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2017+ models until 2029-2033
Extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers or third-party providers
All used Volvo V90 Cross Country D5 models are outside the original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active depending on the production date. Volvo extended warranty programs are available but check exclusions for turbocharger, air suspension, and emissions system components, as these are the most likely high-cost repairs.
