The third-generation V70 was Volvo's flagship estate, combining generous interior space with Scandinavian comfort and strong safety credentials. The T5 designation covers the 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder in 200 hp (B5254T6, 2008-2009) and 231 hp (B5254T10/T11, 2010-2011) forms. From 2011, some markets received a 2.0-litre four-cylinder T5, but the five-cylinder remains the most common used-market variant. The inline-five has a long heritage and many examples exceed 300,000 km with diligent maintenance.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but PCV and suspension need proactive care
The 2.5-litre five-cylinder is one of Volvo's most durable powertrains, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. The main ownership risks centre on the PCV system (which clogs predictably and needs periodic attention), rear trailing arm bushings (a known P3 platform weakness), and the automatic gearbox if transmission fluid has never been changed. None of these issues are catastrophic when caught early, but neglected cars can accumulate several repair bills in quick succession. A well-maintained manual-gearbox example with documented PCV and timing belt service is the lowest-risk buy.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Seatbelt anchor cable fatigue (2007-2016 all V70 P3 models) Verify completed
Plastic intake manifold melting risk due to carbon build-up (2012-2016 models) Verify completed
Cooling system air retention after coolant refill (2014-2016 models) Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2007-2012 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The seatbelt anchor cable recall (2020) affects all P3 V70 model years and should be treated as critical. The intake manifold recall (2012-2016) is specific to certain engine variants but worth confirming regardless.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all V70 P3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on 2007-2013 models, may still apply to 2014-2016
Extended warranty availability Available through Volvo dealers and independent providers
All V70 P3 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Volvo's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to the newest examples (2014-2016 production). Extended warranties are available through Volvo dealers and third-party providers, though pre-existing conditions will not be covered.
