The third-generation S60 sits on Volvo's SPA platform alongside the V60, XC60, and 90-series cars. From the 2020-2021 model year the T5 petrol was replaced by the B5, which pairs the 2.0-litre VEA turbo with a 48-volt mild hybrid system: a belt-driven integrated starter generator (ISG), a small lithium-ion 48V pack, and a DC-DC converter that handles the 12V loads. The eight-speed Aisin AWF8F35 automatic stays in place. European production ended in 2024 as Volvo wound down its sedans for the EV transition.· more· less

Common Problems
Updated VEA engine is sound, but the 48V system adds new failure points
The 2020+ S60 B5 benefits from the post-2016 piston ring fix, so the oil consumption issue that plagued earlier VEA engines is largely resolved. The main concerns shift to the 48V mild hybrid hardware (ISG, MVBM module, 48V battery), the TCAM telematics unit, and the ongoing SPA-platform electrical and infotainment quirks. Most of these issues are well-documented and have OTA software fixes available. The car is generally reliable for a complex modern premium sedan, but ownership requires keeping software up to date, using a trickle charger if parked for long periods, and budgeting for one significant electrical event over 10 years.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ECM software error preventing combustion engine restart and causing loss of drive power (2022-2023 S60) Critical - verify completed
Rearview camera image may not display when in reverse (2023-2025 S60, OTA software update) Verify completed
Brake control module 2 (BCM2) diagnostic error - potential loss of ABS, ESC, traction control (2023 S60) Verify completed
Seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early (2021-2022 S60) Verify completed
Passenger airbag mounting bolts may be insufficiently tightened (2019-2024 S60) Verify completed
Vehicle Connectivity Module (VCM) software for emergency call function (Sept-Oct 2018 production) Verify if applicable
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ECM software recall on 2022-2023 cars is particularly important because it directly affects whether the engine can be restarted. Most recall fixes for this generation can be applied via over-the-air software updates.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all but the youngest 2024 cars
48V hybrid component warranty (markets vary) Some markets offer 8 years / 160,000 km on hybrid-specific parts
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still active on all S60 B5 models
Extended warranty (Volvo Selekt) Available through Volvo dealers for qualifying used cars
Most S60 B5 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Hybrid-specific component coverage varies significantly by market: ask the seller for paperwork or check with a Volvo dealer using the VIN. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all 2020+ cars.

Volvo S60 T5 P3
Volvo S60 T5 P3 2010-2018
Previous generation with turbocharged five-cylinder. Simpler powertrain without 48V complexity, but oil consumption on 2013-2016 engines and belt tensioner risks.
Volvo XC60 T5 Mk2
Volvo XC60 T5 Mk2 2017-2021
Same SPA platform without mild hybrid. Shares Sensus infotainment instability and sunroof drain leaks, but avoids the 48V system failure points.
Volvo V60 T4 Mk2
Volvo V60 T4 Mk2 2018-2020
Estate sibling without mild hybrid. Same SPA platform issues with infotainment and electrical drain, but simpler powertrain. T4 was replaced by B4 mild hybrid from late 2020.
BMW 320i G20
BMW 320i G20 2019-present
Direct competitor. More refined drivetrain but starter motor recall affects 2019-2022 cars. Generally lower running costs than the Volvo's 48V system.
Audi A4 B9 2.0 TFSI
Audi A4 B9 2.0 TFSI 2015-2023
Similar size and price point. Audi has water pump and carbon buildup concerns; Volvo avoids these but adds mild hybrid complexity.
