Volvo's smallest and most affordable EV, built on Geely's SEA platform shared with the Smart #1 and Zeekr X. The EX30 launched in late 2023 as a compact electric crossover positioned below the XC40 Recharge. It has sold extremely well in Europe, becoming one of the top-selling EVs on the continent within its first year. Two battery options exist: a 51 kWh LFP pack (standard range, ~344 km WLTP) and a 69 kWh NMC pack (extended range, ~476 km WLTP), both paired with a single 200 kW rear motor.· more· less

Common Problems
Software-heavy first generation with typical EV teething issues
The EX30's drivetrain hardware appears robust so far, with no widespread motor or inverter failures reported. The main ownership frustrations center on software maturity: infotainment bugs, app connectivity, and keyless entry quirks. The LFP battery variant avoids the serious NMC fire-risk recall. As a first-generation model on a new platform, some teething issues are expected, and Volvo has been issuing OTA updates to address them. Most issues are annoyances rather than safety or reliability concerns, but buyers should be comfortable with a car that is still being refined through software updates.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
High-voltage battery fire risk — 69 kWh NMC pack (Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance, 2024-2026 production) Critical - verify completed
Display software — central screen and driver display could freeze or enter test mode (all EX30s, mid-2024 recall, ~70,000 units globally) Verify completed
Front seat recliner welding — inadequate weld on manual front seats (2023-2024 production, ~7,945 units) Verify completed
Contact Volvo with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The battery fire recall is critical for Extended Range models but does not affect the 51 kWh LFP standard-range variant. The display software recall applies to all EX30s and is resolved via software update.
