2016-2020 · 2.0 D5 AWD (235 hp) D4204T23 twin-turbo diesel

Volvo's flagship sedan on the SPA platform, competing with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The D5 badge denotes the most powerful diesel variant, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo with 235 hp and the unique PowerPulse compressed-air anti-lag system. Standard AWD and the Aisin 8-speed automatic complete a refined and comfortable drivetrain. The D5 was replaced by the B5 mild-hybrid diesel from late 2020.

Refined cabin, strong safety Powerful and efficient diesel
PowerPulse hose known to burst Complex emissions system (DPF + AdBlue)
Buy if: You want a comfortable, safe executive sedan with strong diesel performance and can verify the intake manifold fire recall has been completed.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and AdBlue issues) or want the lowest possible repair costs in this segment.

Common Problems
Capable diesel drivetrain with moderate emissions system complexity
The D4204T23 twin-turbo diesel is a well-engineered and generally robust engine capable of high mileage when properly maintained. The main ownership concerns centre around the diesel emissions systems (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) which require consistent motorway driving to function properly, the PowerPulse hose which is a known and inexpensive failure, and the Sensus infotainment system which can be glitchy. The compound turbo system is reliable but very expensive if it does fail. Verify the intake manifold fire recall has been completed on any car built before April 2018. Cars with documented Volvo dealer service history and regular motorway use are the safest buy.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Plastic intake manifold melting/fire risk (2014-2019 four-cylinder diesel models, global recall of 507,000 vehicles) Critical - verify completed before purchase
Low-pressure fuel pump fuse failure causing engine stall (2019-2020 models, R10100 - 15A fuse replaced with 20A) Verify completed
Front seat rail flange nuts potentially not installed during assembly (2018-2019 models) Verify completed
AEB software/hardware incompatibility (2019-2020 models) Verify completed
Inflatable curtain airbag retaining bolt (2017 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The intake manifold fire recall is particularly critical for all S90 D5 models built before April 2018. The fuel pump fuse recall affects 2019-2020 models specifically.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all D5 models (2016-2020 production)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2016-2020 models until 2028-2032
Volvo extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers, recommended for out-of-warranty ownership
All S90 D5 models are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active depending on the production date. Given the complexity of the diesel emissions systems and compound turbocharger, an extended warranty or a thorough pre-purchase inspection is strongly recommended.

Volvo S60 T5 2010-2018 Petrol T5 on the older P3 platform. No diesel emissions complexity. The 2.5L five-cylinder is generally reliable but has oil consumption reports on pre-2016 units. Volvo V60 D4 2010-2018 Older D4 diesel on P3 platform. Similar DPF/EGR concerns but no PowerPulse system. Generally cheaper to maintain. Volvo V40 D2 2012-2019 Smaller Volvo diesel. Simpler single-turbo engine but door lock module and DPF issues are common on short-trip driving. Volvo V60 T4 Mk2 2018-2020 Same SPA platform, petrol T4 engine. No diesel-specific issues but shares Sensus infotainment and tailgate problems. Volvo C30 T5 P1 2006-2013 Much older Volvo with the legendary 5-cylinder turbo. Far simpler mechanically but PCV and coolant hose issues need attention.
