The second-generation XC60 launched in 2017 on the SPA platform and quickly became Volvo's best-selling SUV. The D5 sits at the top of the diesel range with a twin-turbo 2.0 VEA engine and PowerPulse compressed-air anti-lag system, paired with Aisin 8-speed automatic and AWD as standard. PowerPulse was phased out in January 2020 in favor of the B5 mild hybrid diesel.· more· less

Strong torque, refined cabin Solid build, good crash safety
PowerPulse hose burst is common EGR carbon build-up on short trips
Buy if: You do mostly longer motorway journeys, want a refined diesel SUV, and can verify the tailgate recall and any PowerPulse hose work has been completed.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR clogging) or want to avoid potentially expensive electronic and turbo-system repairs out of warranty.

Common Problems
Capable family SUV but diesel-specific issues to verify
The XC60 D5 Mk2 is generally well-regarded for refinement, safety and build quality. The main concerns are diesel-system items - PowerPulse hose, EGR carbon, DPF clogging on short-trip cars - and a known tailgate recall on 2018-2019 production. Most issues are well documented with established fix paths, but they add up on an out-of-warranty car. Service history quality and use pattern (motorway vs. urban) matter more here than mileage alone.
