Three-door Swedish hatchback built on the P1 platform shared with the S40 and V50, sold from 2007 to 2013. The D4 facelift uses the D5204T 2.0-litre five-cylinder diesel (177 hp) introduced in 2010, replacing the older 2.0D 136 hp four-cylinder. The five-cylinder is mechanically robust and shares many parts with other Volvo P1 cars, which keeps independent specialist support strong across Western Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid five-cylinder diesel, but Powershift and DMF can bite
The D5204T five-cylinder is a robust engine that comfortably reaches 250,000-300,000 km when serviced properly. The biggest financial risks come from the gearbox side: avoid the Powershift automatic if at all possible, and budget for clutch and DMF replacement on any high-mileage manual. Short-trip use causes most other issues - DPF clogging, intake carbon, EGR fouling - so a car with documented motorway use is preferable.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Power steering return hose vulcanisation defect (2008-2009 production) Verify completed
Master cylinder anodised layer / brake fluid leak (early production) Verify if applicable
Inlet manifold flap fastening (selected diesel models) Verify if applicable
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. Recall coverage on the C30 D4 is relatively light compared to the older 1.6D models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all C30 D4 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or near-expiry on all cars
Extended warranty availability Available through Volvo Selekt and independent providers
All Volvo C30 D4 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty has expired on every car or will expire shortly. Extended warranty cover is available but check exclusions carefully, especially for Powershift gearbox internals.
