The second-generation V70 on Volvo's P2 platform combined solid build quality with generous interior space, making it a popular family estate across Europe. The 2.4D five-cylinder turbodiesel produces 130 to 163 hp depending on the variant and is generally considered durable, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. It shares all platform-level concerns with the D5 (ABS module, CEM electrical faults, suspension bushings) while being mechanically less stressed than the more powerful 185 hp D5 variant.· more· less

Buy if: You want a reliable, spacious diesel estate with proven mechanicals and can find one with complete service history showing timing belt and auxiliary belt replacements.
Avoid if: You only drive short urban trips (DPF clogging on 2005+ models) or cannot tolerate dealing with age-related electrical issues.

Common Problems
Durable diesel engine on a solid platform, but electrical and ancillary systems need attention
The 2.4D five-cylinder diesel is mechanically robust and regularly exceeds 300,000 km with proper maintenance. Being the lower-output variant, it is slightly less stressed than the 185 hp D5. The main concerns are platform-related electrical issues (ABS module, CEM) shared with all P2 Volvos, and diesel-specific items (EGR, swirl flaps, injectors). The auxiliary belt tensioner recall is critical to verify. Automatic transmission cars should have their fluid changed regularly despite Volvo's 'sealed for life' claim. Pre-2005 cars without a DPF are preferable for short-trip driving. Most issues are well-documented with established repair procedures and reasonable costs at independent workshops.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Auxiliary drive belt tensioner failure (D5244T diesel engines) - can cause timing belt damage and engine destruction Critical - verify completed
Driver airbag inflator rupture risk (2001-2007, ZF inflator) Critical - verify completed
Fuel injector fire risk (2006 diesel models) Verify completed
Detachable tow bar loosening (V70 models with factory towbar) Verify completed
Fuel system crack risk in warm climates (2001-2005 models) Verify completed
The auxiliary belt tensioner recall is the most critical for all D5244T diesel variants. A failed tensioner can cause the belt to wrap around the timing belt, destroying the engine. The driver airbag inflator recall (ZF-manufactured, not Takata) is also safety-critical. Contact Volvo with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all P2 V70 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models
Extended warranty Third-party options only
All Volvo V70 P2 2.4D models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Volvo's 12-year rust perforation warranty has also expired on all examples. Third-party extended warranties are available from independent providers, but check exclusions carefully as turbo, injector, and DPF failures on high-mileage diesels are often excluded.
