Volvo C40 Recharge Single Motor CMA

The C40 Recharge uses Google's Android Automotive infotainment system, which is shared with the XC40 Recharge and Polestar 2. Owners widely report the center screen freezing, spontaneously rebooting, or going completely black while driving. When this happens, navigation, climate controls, reversing camera, and audio all become unavailable until the system restarts. The issue is most common on 2022 cars with early software versions. Most incidents can be resolved by holding the home button for 20 seconds to force a reboot. OTA software updates have progressively improved stability, and cars running version 2.5 or later are significantly more reliable. If crashes persist after all updates, the IHU (Infotainment Head Unit) may need hardware replacement at around €200-350 including reprogramming. On early cars, Volvo has replaced the unit under warranty in severe cases.

Many C40 owners report intermittent charging failures, typically with the charge port ring flashing red and an error message displayed. The car refuses to start a charge session even when the charger works fine for other vehicles. In most cases, the issue is software-related and resolved by locking/unlocking the car, restarting, or receiving an OTA update. Early 2022 cars were particularly affected, with some also experiencing charge sessions stopping at 70-80% instead of reaching the set target. In persistent cases, the onboard charger module (OBC) itself may be faulty and require replacement. The OBC part costs approximately €1,000-1,400. When replaced under warranty, no cost to the owner. This is a well-documented CMA platform issue affecting the C40, XC40, and Polestar 2. The front strut mount top bearings wear prematurely, causing clunking, creaking, or popping noises over bumps or when turning at low speeds. The C40 weighs around 2,045 kg, significantly heavier than the ICE XC40 (roughly 1,600 kg), which accelerates bearing wear. Volvo issued Technical Journal TJ 36512 with updated replacement bearings including a spacer. Replacement costs €300-400 at an independent shop (both sides, parts, labour, and alignment) or up to €800 at a Volvo dealer. The updated parts are more durable but the issue can still recur on cars driven on rough roads.

Because the C40 uses regenerative braking for most stopping, the conventional friction brakes are rarely engaged. This causes brake discs to develop surface rust, particularly in wet or salty climates. After overnight rain, the brakes can seize to the pads, producing a loud clunk when first moving. In severe cases, discs develop deep pitting and the pads bond to the rotor surface. Volvo updated to a reformulated brake pad compound around 2022 that resists bonding better. The manufacturer recommends regular firm braking with the friction brake to keep discs clean. If discs are badly pitted, replacement of discs and pads on one axle costs €200-600 depending on the shop. This is a characteristic shared by most EVs, not a C40-specific defect.

The 12V auxiliary battery can drain if the car is parked for more than 1-2 weeks without being plugged in, even when the high-voltage battery has ample charge. The car then cannot unlock or start. This was particularly common on early 2022 models and in cold weather. Software updates (OTA version 2.5 and later) improved the 12V charging logic, allowing the main battery to properly maintain the 12V system. If the car is kept plugged in while parked, the 12V battery stays charged. For cars with outdated software, updating resolves the problem for most owners. Some owners report the climate system intermittently stops providing heat or cooling. The high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH) is a known weak point across the CMA electric platform, shared with the XC40 Recharge and Polestar 2. The HVCH heats both the cabin and the battery coolant loop. When it fails, symptoms include no cabin heat, reduced charging speed, and range loss in cold weather. Replacement is complex (requires dashboard area access and high-voltage expertise) and costs €1,200-1,500 at a dealer. However, many heating failures are caused by simpler issues: a relay in the fuse box (€50-100 to replace), a coolant control valve, or a software glitch. Locking the car and waiting five minutes can reset software-related climate failures. Heat pump-equipped models appear slightly more susceptible.

The BECM manages the high-voltage battery system, while the BDU handles the contactors that connect and disconnect the battery. Failure triggers a 'Propulsion System Service Required' warning and can immobilize the car. This is rare but serious when it occurs. Many instances are caused by temporary software glitches that resolve after restarting the car. Persistent warnings typically indicate hardware failure requiring component replacement. Combined BECM and BDU replacement costs approximately €4,500-5,000 outside warranty.
