The B5 replaced the T5 petrol in the V60 lineup from late 2020 as Volvo's mid-range mild-hybrid powertrain, pairing the 2.0-litre VEA four-cylinder turbo with a 48V integrated starter-generator (ISG). It produces 250 hp and uses the Aisin TG-81SC 8-speed automatic. The B5 sits on the same SPA platform as the V90, XC60 and XC90, and competes with the BMW 3 Series Touring, Audi A4 Avant and Mercedes C-Class estate. It is sold as both standard V60 and lifted V60 Cross Country.· more· less

Buy if: You want a comfortable Scandinavian estate with the latest mild-hybrid economy gains and can verify the ECM recall and any TCAM/battery service work has been completed.
Avoid if: You cannot tolerate occasional infotainment freezes, plan to leave the car parked for weeks without a trickle charger, or want a simple non-electrified powertrain.

Common Problems
Mostly solid, but Volvo's mild-hybrid electronics need watching
The V60 B5 builds on a well-developed SPA platform and a mature 2.0 VEA petrol engine. The B5 powertrain itself is generally robust and the Aisin 8-speed automatic has a long reliability track record. The main ownership concerns are software-related rather than mechanical: the ECM recall (must be verified completed), Android Automotive infotainment glitches on 2022+ cars, TCAM-related parasitic draw, and the carry-over 12V battery drain typical of every SPA Volvo. Most issues are software-fixable or modest-cost wear items. Keep the car on a trickle charger if it sits idle, verify all recall and software updates have been done, and budget for one major electronics issue over a 7-year ownership.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ECM software may prevent combustion engine starting once 48V battery drains (2022-2023 B5/B6 models, R10198) Critical - verify completed
Rearview camera image may not display when in reverse (2023-2025 V60) Verify completed
BCM2 diagnostic error affecting ABS/ESC/traction control (selected 2022-2024 production) Verify if applicable
Low-pressure fuel pump fuse failure causing engine stall (carryover from earlier production - 2019-2020) Not applicable to B5 but verify if engine was replaced
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ECM software recall (R10198) is critical on 2022-2023 builds - an un-recalled car can leave you stranded.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on 2020-2023 cars; still active on most 2024+
Hybrid component warranty Typically 8 years / 160,000 km on 48V components - verify with delivery date
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still active on all B5 production until 2032 at earliest
Volvo Selekt extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers for certified pre-owned vehicles
All V60 B5 models built before 2024 are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 8-year hybrid component warranty may still apply to the 48V system and ISG. The 12-year rust perforation warranty is active across the entire production run. An extended warranty (Volvo Selekt or similar) is worth considering given the complexity of the mild-hybrid system and Volvo's higher-than-average labor rates.
