Volvo V60 Mk2 B5

Volvo recalled approximately 100,000 cars (2022-2023 S60, V60, S90, XC60, XC90) globally in December 2022 for an Engine Control Module software bug. Once the 48V hybrid battery drained below a threshold, the ECM would prevent the combustion engine from restarting, causing total loss of motive power. The fix is a free ECM software update at any Volvo dealer (around 30 minutes). On unfixed cars, owners report stalls in traffic and being stranded. Before purchase, confirm the recall (R10198 in the US, equivalent local references in Europe) has been applied. If somehow missed, the only cost is workshop time at €100-250 for the diagnostic visit. Outside the recall, no further engine starting issues are widely reported.

V60 B5 models built before late 2021 use the legacy Sensus system (which freezes occasionally and is fixed via software update). From the 2022 model year onwards the V60 switched to Android Automotive (Google-based) infotainment, which has its own set of teething issues: slow boot, GPS dropouts, Google Assistant failures, Apple CarPlay disconnects, and occasional climate-control unresponsiveness. Volvo continuously pushes OTA software updates that improve stability significantly over time. A soft reset (hold the home button 20-30 seconds) clears most freezes. Most owners are now satisfied after the cumulative 2023-2024 updates. Replacing the center display module is rarely needed but costs €1,500-2,000 if it goes wrong out of warranty.

Like other modern SPA-platform Volvos, the V60 B5 has substantial parasitic draw from the TCAM modem, proximity keyless system, and infotainment standby. Owners commonly report the 12V battery dying after 10-14 days of non-use, sometimes triggering 'Start/Stop battery service required' or 'Low key battery' warnings as early as the second year. An OEM-spec AGM replacement is €200-350 plus 1 hour labour; some cars also have a smaller auxiliary battery feeding the start/stop system at €150-250. A CTEK MXS 5.0 trickle charger (€90) is the standard workaround. Note this is in addition to the separate 48V hybrid battery; the 12V starts the car, the 48V assists the powertrain.

There are several documented cases (mainly 2022-2023 builds) where the TCAM (Telematics Control Module) gets stuck in a fault loop, drawing constant high current and draining both the 12V starter battery and the 48V hybrid battery within days. Typical telltale is a permanently flashing red SOS light or loss of the Volvo On Call app connection. Volvo can reset or replace the TCAM under warranty if still in coverage. Out of warranty, a TCAM replacement runs €800-1,500 parts plus labour. In extreme cases where the 48V pack has been deeply discharged, the pack itself may need replacement (a far more expensive proposition - see ISG/48V battery risk below).

Reports of 48V battery capacity loss generally start appearing around 80,000-120,000 km, leading to error messages and reduced regen/start-stop functionality. The Integrated Starter Generator (ISG, which replaces the conventional starter and alternator) bearings have also been reported to wear in the same mileage range on a small number of cars. The 48V battery itself is around €1,000-1,500 with core exchange; ISG replacement runs €1,500-2,500 including labour. The vast majority of B5 cars currently on the used market are too young to have hit this mileage, so failure rates remain low. Volvo's standard 8-year hybrid component warranty may still apply on cars sold from 2020 onwards - verify with the dealer.

Carried over from the T4 and shared across all V60 Mk2 production: the powered tailgate is prone to gas-strut weakening and occasional pull-down motor failure typically after 25,000-50,000 km. Symptoms are the tailgate dropping back down a few centimetres after opening, refusing to latch automatically, or stopping mid-cycle. Each gas strut is €250-370 from Volvo, around half that aftermarket. The pull-down motor is €200-300. A complete pair of struts plus motor with labour comes to €600-1,200; a simple aftermarket strut swap can be done for €300-500.

The Aisin TG-81SC 8-speed automatic in the B5 is fundamentally durable (rated for 200,000+ km) and has a strong track record across Volvo and other manufacturers. However, occasional reports of jerky low-speed shifts, slight hesitation when engaging reverse, and an occasional firm 1st-2nd upshift appear on forums - particularly when the transmission fluid is cold. Volvo's official position is 'lifetime fluid', but independent specialists recommend a fluid change every 60,000-80,000 km. Service cost is €300-500. Software flashes have also smoothed shift quality on earlier cars. Valve body or full transmission failure is rare; if needed, expect €1,500-3,000.

The electronic parking brake uses motors integrated into each rear caliper. A small number of B5 owners report failures - most often a broken wire to the caliper, occasionally a motor seizure. Symptoms are warning messages on the dash and the parking brake refusing to engage or release. Diagnosis is €100-150; if a single caliper-motor assembly needs replacing, expect €500-800 at a specialist, €1,000-1,500 at a dealer for both sides. This is uncommon but worth checking on test drive.
