The fastest V40 hatchback, offered with two distinct engine families over its production run. Early models (2012-2015) use the characterful 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder producing 254 hp, while later cars (2015-2019) switched to the 2.0-litre four-cylinder Drive-E unit making 245 hp. Both are paired with automatic gearboxes and deliver brisk performance in a compact, safety-focused package. The five-cylinder has a strong long-term track record; the four-cylinder introduced improved efficiency but brought early piston ring oil consumption issues that were addressed during production.· more· less

Common Problems
Two different engine stories under one badge
The V40 T5 label covers two distinct powertrains. The 2.5-litre five-cylinder (2012-2015) is a well-proven unit with straightforward issues (PCV, oil consumption at very high mileage) that are manageable with proper maintenance. The 2.0-litre Drive-E (2015-2019) brought better fuel economy but introduced early piston ring defects on pre-late-2015 builds. Regardless of engine, the V40 shares platform-level concerns with door locks, electric steering racks, and AC drain blockages. Automatic gearbox longevity depends heavily on whether the fluid has been changed despite being officially labelled a lifetime fill. Overall, a reasonably reliable premium hatchback that rewards diligent maintenance and informed buying.
