The entry-level petrol in Volvo's P3-generation mid-size sedan, positioned below the five-cylinder T5. The T3 badge covers two different engines: pre-facelift cars (2010-2014) use the Ford-derived 1.6L B4164T3, while post-facelift models (2015-2018) switched to Volvo's own 2.0L VEA Drive-E unit. Both produce around 150 hp and drive the front wheels through a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Powershift dual-clutch automatic. The S60 T3 is comfortable, safe, and relatively affordable to run compared to the T5.· more· less

Comfortable, safe, well-built cabin Good fuel economy for its class
Ford 1.6 has coolant system concerns Powershift DCT less reliable than manual
Buy if: You want a safe, refined premium sedan at a modest price and can find one with a manual gearbox and verified recall work.
Avoid if: You are looking at a Powershift automatic with no fluid change records, or a pre-2013 1.6L model with any signs of coolant loss.

Common Problems
Generally reliable, but engine variant and gearbox choice matter significantly
The S60 T3 is one of the more affordable P3 models and avoids the oil consumption and belt routing issues of the five-cylinder T5. The 1.6L Ford-derived engine (2010-2014) is proven but needs the exhaust manifold gasket recall verified. The 2.0L VEA (2015-2018) is more refined but early production models share the oil consumption concern common to VEA engines. Manual gearbox models are notably more reliable than Powershift automatics. With verified recall work, regular fluid changes, and a manual gearbox, the T3 is a sensible used buy in this segment.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Exhaust manifold gasket and coolant pressure relief valve (1.6L B4164T engine, primarily T4 but also some T3 models) Critical - verify completed
Front seatbelt anchor cable fatigue (2011-2018 S60/V60) Verify completed
Fuel pump software compatibility (2012 models built Nov 2010-May 2011) Verify if applicable
Front seatbelt attaching stud (2016-2017 models) Verify if applicable
Power steering software and ECM update (2011 models) Verify if applicable
The exhaust manifold gasket recall is particularly important for cars with the 1.6L engine. Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The 2.0L VEA engine has different recall campaigns (notably the inlet manifold recall on diesel variants, which does not affect the T3 petrol).
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used S60 P3 models
Volvo Selekt extended warranty Available on approved used cars from Volvo dealers, typically 1-2 years
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models, subject to regular maintenance
All S60 T3 P3 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Volvo's rust perforation warranty runs 12 years from first registration, so later models (2014-2018) may still be covered. Extended warranty through Volvo Selekt is available when purchasing from authorised Volvo used car dealers.
