The second-generation XC60 moved to the SPA platform shared with the XC90 and S90, bringing a significant step up in refinement and technology. The D4 is the standard diesel, producing 190 hp from a 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder (VEA D4204T14), paired with an Aisin 8-speed automatic. Available as front-wheel drive or AWD, it was sold under the D4 badge from 2017 until approximately 2020, when it became the B4 with 48V mild-hybrid assistance.· more· less

Common Problems
Diesel-specific concerns on top of known SPA platform quirks
The D4 VEA engine is competent and economical, but adds diesel-specific maintenance headaches to the SPA platform's existing electrical quirks. The EGR cooler and intake manifold recall is the most critical item to verify before purchase. On top of that, turbo wear, DPF clogging (for short-trip drivers), and AdBlue system faults are all documented concerns. The SPA platform itself brings Sensus infotainment instability, 12V battery drain, and sunroof leak potential. Highway-driven examples with complete service history and all recall work verified are significantly lower risk than city-driven cars with patchy records.
