Volvo EC40 Single Motor CMA

The EC40 uses a Google Android Automotive infotainment system that is prone to freezing, spontaneous reboots, or going completely black while driving. When the system crashes, navigation, climate controls, reversing camera, and audio all become unavailable. The issue affects all CMA-platform Volvo EVs but is most common on cars with early software versions. Most incidents resolve by holding the home button for 20 seconds to force a reboot. OTA software updates have progressively improved stability, and cars running version 2.5 or later are significantly more reliable. If crashes persist after updates, the IHU (Infotainment Head Unit) may need replacement at approximately €200-350 including reprogramming.

This is a well-documented issue across all CMA-platform Volvo models, including the EC40. The front strut mount top bearings wear prematurely, causing clunking, creaking, or popping noises over bumps or when turning at low speeds. The EC40 weighs approximately 2,000 kg, which stresses these bearings more than on lighter ICE variants. Volvo has acknowledged the issue with Technical Journal TJ 36512 and released updated replacement bearings with a spacer. Replacement typically costs €300-400 at an independent shop (both sides, parts, labour, and alignment) or up to €800 at a Volvo dealer. Some owners report needing a second replacement within two years, indicating the updated parts are improved but not immune to the problem.

Because the EC40 uses regenerative braking for most deceleration, the conventional friction brakes are rarely engaged. This causes brake discs to develop surface rust, particularly in wet or humid conditions. After the car sits overnight in rain, the brakes can seize to the pads, causing a loud clunk when first moving. In severe cases, brake pads bond to the discs and require early replacement. Volvo changed to a reformulated brake pad compound around 2022 that resists bonding better. Volvo recommends periodic firm braking using the friction brakes to prevent corrosion buildup. If discs are badly pitted, replacement of discs and pads on one axle costs €200-600 depending on the shop.

The 12V auxiliary battery can drain if the car is left parked for more than 1-2 weeks without being plugged in, even when the high-voltage battery has charge. This prevents the car from unlocking or starting. The issue was more common on earlier CMA EVs but can still occur on the EC40 if software is not up to date. A software update (OTA version 2.5 and later) largely resolved this by improving the charging logic for the 12V battery from the main pack. Keeping the car plugged in when parked for extended periods is the most reliable prevention. If the 12V battery itself has been damaged from repeated deep discharges, replacement costs €150-350 including programming.

The coolant control valve (part 31684222) manages coolant flow between the battery thermal management system and the cabin heater. When it sticks or fails, the most common symptom is sudden loss of cabin heat, often paired with a 'Coolant System Service' or 'Propulsion System Service Required' warning. The issue is shared across CMA-platform Volvo EVs and Polestar 2. A faulty valve can compromise cooling for the high-voltage battery and motors if left unaddressed, risking more expensive damage. Repair involves replacing the valve block and bleeding the coolant system. Due to high-voltage safety requirements, this is not a DIY-friendly repair. Cost ranges from €400 at a specialist to €1,200 at a Volvo dealer, depending on labor rates and whether additional coolant system components need replacement.

Owners report intermittent charging errors, manifesting as a red charge-port ring and 'Error charging' messages. These occur on both home AC wallboxes and DC fast chargers. Most incidents are caused by software incompatibility with specific charger brands, dust or debris in the charge port, or temporary communication faults. Power-cycling the charging session (unplug, wait 2-3 minutes, retry) resolves most cases. Software updates have progressively improved charger compatibility. In rare cases, the charge port assembly or onboard charger module requires service. Charge port cleaning and inspection is typically free or minimal cost. OBC replacement, while rare, can cost €800 or more out of warranty due to the part cost and labor involved.
