Third-generation Volvo S60 on the SPA platform shared with the V60, XC60, V90 and XC90. The T5 is the turbo-only petrol option producing 250 hp from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Drive-E engine paired with an Aisin 8-speed automatic. Sold as a FWD-only sedan in Europe between 2018 and 2024, it competes with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class. Build quality is solid, safety credentials are class-leading, and the cabin remains one of the segment's most distinctive interiors.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid engine, but SPA electronics and a busy recall history need verification
The B4204T26 T5 engine is fundamentally sound — turbo only, no supercharger, a chain rather than belt, and the piston ring issue that plagued earlier Drive-E units was resolved before the SPA-platform S60 entered production. Most of the ownership friction comes from the SPA platform itself: Sensus infotainment glitches, 12V battery drain, and a relatively long list of safety recalls from the first two model years. Cars with a clean recall history, regular dealer software updates and a trickle charger when parked tend to be reliable well past 150,000 km.

The S60 SPA carries a relatively busy recall history from its first two model years. Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The fuel pump fuse (R10100) and AEB software (R29998) recalls on 2019-2020 cars are particularly important.

BMW 330i G20 2019-present
Sharper to drive with similar running costs. B48 engine is generally robust. iDrive 7 is more stable than Sensus.
Volvo V60 T5 Mk1
Volvo V60 T5 Mk1 2014-2018
Estate predecessor with the older Drive-E. Cheaper to buy but pre-2016 engines carry the well-known piston ring oil consumption risk.
