The most common cause is a software issue that has been progressively patched through dealer updates. The standard workaround is a soft reset (press and hold the Home button for 20-30 seconds) or letting the car go fully to sleep for 30 minutes after locking it. Most cars respond to a full software flash at the dealer, which is generally free. In rare cases where the centre display module itself has failed, replacement runs €1,500-2,000. Verify the latest software has been applied before purchase.

The S60 SPA pulls non-trivial standby current from the proximity key system, TCAM telematics module and the satellite antenna in the shark fin. Owners on SwedeSpeed and Volvo forums report Start/Stop battery warnings as early as the second year of ownership and dead batteries after 2-3 weeks of non-use. A Volvo Technical Service Bulletin (TJ26188) addresses parasitic drain from the satellite radio module. A replacement AGM battery costs €200-350 fitted, plus registration at the dealer for the Start/Stop system to relearn it. For cars left standing more than a week at a time, a quality trickle charger (CTEK MXS 5.0 or 7.0) is essential. This is a characteristic of the platform more than a defect, but it catches many owners off guard.

Volvo issued a recall (R10100) for 2019-2020 S60 vehicles because the fuse for the low-pressure (in-tank) fuel pump could blow, killing the pump and stalling the engine. Dealers replaced the affected fuse free of charge under the recall. If the recall was completed, the risk is essentially eliminated. If it was missed, replacement of the pump itself (around €300-400 fitted at an independent shop) is occasionally needed. The B4204T26 uses an electrically driven water pump controlled through the engine management system. Forum reports across XC60, V60 and S60 SPA owners point to abrupt failures, sometimes without warning, in the 100,000-150,000 km window. Symptoms include coolant temperature spikes, the temperature warning illuminating, or in some cases simply a stored fault code with no driver indication. The pump itself costs around €300-400, with labour adding another €200-400 at an independent specialist. Some failures appear to be related to voltage spikes from a weak 12V battery, so keeping the battery healthy may help. Replace at the first sign of weeping or intermittent operation rather than waiting for full failure.

Pilot Assist on earlier-build cars has been reported to oscillate within the lane, occasionally drift across white lines, or follow off-ramps the driver did not intend to take. Volvo addressed many cases through ASDM (Active Safety Domain Master) software updates, which are usually free at the dealer. Like all direct-injection petrol engines, the T5 does not wash fuel over the intake valves, so carbon deposits gradually accumulate. By 100,000-120,000 km, owners typically find 2-3 mm of buildup, leading to slightly rough idle, mild loss of power, and reduced fuel economy. The issue is gradual rather than catastrophic.
