Volvo's flagship sedan on the SPA platform, competing with the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The T5 is the single-turbo petrol variant, simpler than the supercharged-and-turbocharged T6 and without the diesel emissions hardware of the D5. Power comes from a 250 hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder paired with an Aisin TG-81SC 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive only. Production ran from 2016 until the T5 was replaced by the B5 mild-hybrid in late 2020.· more· less

Common Problems
Comfortable executive saloon with predictable wear points
The T5 is the simplest of the S90 powertrains and avoids the supercharger seal failures of the T6 and the diesel emissions hardware of the D5. The Aisin 8-speed automatic is robust and the engine itself is solid once past the early 2016 piston-ring issue. Most reported problems are predictable wear items (brakes, PCV, sunroof drains, batteries) and software niggles rather than catastrophic failures. A pre-2017-built car or one with no service history is the main thing to avoid.

Sun/moon roof water leak TSB (TJ31272-2016) Verify if applicable
Seat-belt cable wear in front seats (2016-2019) Verify completed

Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2019-2020 fuel pump fuse recall (R10100) is the most important — affects stall risk while driving.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used S90 T5s
Volvo Selekt used-car warranty Available through Volvo dealers on certified cars
Rust perforation warranty 12 years from first registration
All S90 T5s are now outside their original factory warranty. Volvo Selekt certified pre-owned cars come with an extended warranty (typically 12-24 months). Independent extended warranties are available but read the exclusion list carefully — wear items and infotainment are often excluded.
