Premium compact hatchback with strong safety credentials and Scandinavian design. The D3 badge covers two different engines: the older 5-cylinder D5204T6 (2012-2015) and the newer 4-cylinder VEA D4204T9 (2015-2019), both producing 150 hp. The earlier 5-cylinder is smoother and generally more durable, while the VEA 4-cylinder is more efficient but introduces EGR cooler and oil consumption concerns. Both use a timing belt rather than chain, and both pair with either a 6-speed manual or the reliable Aisin Geartronic torque converter automatic.· more· less

VEA piston ring oil consumption EGR and DPF need regular highway use
Buy if: You want a safe, well-equipped diesel hatchback and can find one with documented service history and regular motorway use.
Avoid if: You primarily drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR problems accelerate) or are looking at a pre-2016 VEA engine without verified piston ring status.

Common Problems
Engine generation matters, but generally dependable with proper maintenance
The V40 D3 is a competent diesel hatchback whose reliability profile depends on which engine is fitted. The 5-cylinder D5204T6 (2012-2015) is the simpler, more proven unit with fewer known major failures. The 4-cylinder VEA D4204T9 (2015-2019) is more efficient but carries the EGR cooler weakness and potential piston ring oil consumption issue on early builds. Both engines benefit greatly from regular motorway driving to keep the DPF and EGR clean. Door lock failures affect all V40 models regardless of engine. The Geartronic automatic is reliable, and there is no Powershift dual-clutch concern on the D3.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Intake manifold fire risk from carbon buildup (VEA diesel, 2015-2019) Critical - verify completed
Fuel hose internal cracking causing engine bay leak risk (April 2015 - March 2016 production) Verify completed
Coolant leak during warm-up causing fire risk (2012-2015) Verify completed
Cooling system air pocket formation causing insufficient cooling (2015-2017) Verify completed
Front seatbelt pretensioner deployment defect (2015-2016) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2012-2015 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The intake manifold recall on VEA models is particularly important as unrepaired vehicles pose a fire risk. The fuel hose recall is critical for 2015-2016 production cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used V40 D3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
Extended warranty availability Available through Volvo dealers and third-party providers
All used V40 D3 models are outside their original 2-year Volvo factory warranty. Volvo's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer models. Volvo has occasionally provided goodwill contributions for known issues like EGR failures and door locks on lower-mileage cars.

Volvo V40 D2
Volvo V40 D2 2012-2019
Lower-powered sibling sharing the platform. The D2 adds risk of the problematic 1.6 PSA engine and Powershift gearbox on pre-2015 models.
BMW 118d F20
BMW 118d F20 2011-2019
Direct competitor. Pre-2015 cars have the N47 timing chain issue, which is more serious than the V40's VEA problems. The B47 (2015+) is very reliable.
Audi A3 1.6 TDI 8V
Audi A3 1.6 TDI 8V 2012-2020
Similar segment. EA288 engine is generally solid with fewer known weak points. DQ200 DSG gearbox is the main risk on automatics.
Volvo V60 D4 Mk1
Volvo V60 D4 Mk1 2013-2018
Larger Volvo estate with similar VEA engine. Same EGR and oil consumption concerns, but higher service costs overall.
Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI Mk7
Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI Mk7 2012-2020
More mainstream alternative. EA288 diesel is reliable, but DQ200 DSG is problematic. Manual versions have very few issues.
