The P3 V70 is one of the last traditional Volvo estates, built on the Ford EUCD platform from 2007 to 2016. The D3 badge covers two 5-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel variants: pre-facelift cars (2010-2013) produce 163 hp from the D5204T2/T3, while the 2013+ facelift detuned it to 136 hp (D5204T7). Both are derivatives of the proven D5 family with a shorter stroke, paired with a 6-speed manual or the Aisin TF-80SC 6-speed automatic. Spacious, comfortable, and well-suited to long-distance driving.· more· less

Proven 5-cylinder diesel lineage Very spacious and practical estate
EGR and swirl flap problems DPF clogs on short-trip driving
Buy if: You need a spacious diesel estate for regular motorway use and can find one with full service history and a verified timing belt replacement.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging accelerates) or want a car with cheap, simple repairs when things go wrong.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel estate, but emissions system needs care
The V70 D3 benefits from the proven D5 five-cylinder diesel family in a detuned configuration, which reduces stress on the turbo and ancillaries. The engine itself is capable of high mileages when properly maintained. The main risks centre around the emissions system (EGR valve, DPF, swirl flaps) which deteriorates rapidly on short-trip driving, and the possibility of seized injectors during routine maintenance. Suspension bushes are a known wear point but are relatively affordable to replace. Automatic gearbox cars benefit from regular fluid changes despite Volvo's original sealed-for-life claim. Overall, the V70 D3 is a sensible used buy for owners who do regular motorway driving and maintain the car diligently.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Seatbelt anchor cable fatigue (2008-2016 V70 and XC70) Critical - verify completed
Coolant leak / engine fire risk during warm-up (May 2010 - April 2015 production) Verify completed
Power steering software fault (April 2015 - February 2016 production) Verify if applicable
Inlet manifold melting / fire risk (2014-2016 with 4-cylinder diesel, VEA engine only) Not applicable
Contact Volvo with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The seatbelt anchor cable recall is the most critical for the V70 D3. Note: the inlet manifold fire recall affects only 4-cylinder VEA diesel engines (D4 badge), not the 5-cylinder D3.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all V70 D3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014-2016 models
Extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers and third-party providers
All V70 D3 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Volvo offers a 12-year rust perforation warranty, which may still be active on later production cars. Third-party extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, particularly for diesel emission system components.

Volvo V70 D5 (P2)
Volvo V70 D5 (P2) 2001-2007
Previous generation with the larger 2.4L D5. Same diesel family, proven durable. Older P2 platform has more ABS module and CEM electrical issues.
BMW 520d F10
BMW 520d F10 2010-2017
Direct competitor. Pre-2014 N47 engine has serious timing chain risk. Post-2014 B47 is more reliable. Higher parts cost than the Volvo.
Volkswagen Passat B7 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Passat B7 2.0 TDI 2010-2014
Cheaper to buy and maintain. Common rail EA189 diesel is robust but DSG automatic is less reliable than the Volvo's Aisin gearbox.
Volvo V60 D4 Mk1
Volvo V60 D4 Mk1 2010-2018
Sportier Volvo estate. Later VEA 4-cylinder diesel has known oil consumption and inlet manifold fire recall issues that the V70 D3's 5-cylinder avoids.
Audi A6 C7 2.0 TDI
Audi A6 C7 2.0 TDI 2011-2018
Bigger executive car with proven EA189/EA288 diesel. Multitronic CVT gearbox is a known weak point on automatics. Generally reliable.
