Volvo EC40 Twin Motor CMA

The EC40 uses Volvo's Google Android Automotive infotainment system, which is prone to freezing, spontaneous reboots, or going completely black while driving. When the system crashes, navigation, climate controls, reversing camera, and audio all become unavailable. The issue is inherited from the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, though EC40 models ship with later software versions (2.5+) that are significantly more stable. Most incidents can be resolved by holding the home button for 20 seconds to force a reboot. OTA (over-the-air) updates have progressively improved stability. If crashes persist after all updates, the IHU (Infotainment Head Unit) module may need replacement at approximately €200-350 including reprogramming. Some owners also report intermittent loss of audio output, requiring a system reset to restore sound.

This is a well-documented issue across the entire CMA-platform electric range (XC40, C40, EX40, EC40). The front strut mount top bearings wear prematurely, producing clunking, creaking, or popping noises over bumps or when turning at low speeds. The EC40 weighs around 2,185 kg due to the battery and dual motors, placing greater stress on these bearings compared to ICE variants. Volvo has acknowledged the issue with Technical Journal TJ 36512 and released updated replacement bearings with a spacer. Replacement typically costs €300-400 at an independent shop (both sides, parts plus labour plus alignment) or up to €800 at a Volvo dealer. The updated parts are more durable but the problem can still recur on cars driven frequently on rough roads. Some owners report that deformed springs contributed to the noise, requiring spring replacement alongside the mount.

Intermittent charging errors are one of the most frequently reported complaints on Volvo's CMA-platform EVs. Symptoms include the charge-port ring flashing red, 'Error charging' messages on screen, and the car refusing to start a charge session. The issue appears more often when plugging in at very low battery states (below 10%) or when the charging cable is under tension. In many cases, dust or contamination in the charge-port pins is the cause and cleaning resolves it. Software bugs in the charging-control module account for a further share of incidents, typically resolved by OTA updates. In more serious cases, the onboard charger module (OBC) itself fails, preventing all AC charging. The OBC part costs approximately €1,200-1,400, plus 2-3 hours of labour. Volvo has iterated through multiple OBC part numbers, suggesting ongoing refinement. The OBC is typically covered under the 8-year drivetrain warranty, but verify coverage before purchase.

Because the EC40 uses regenerative braking for most deceleration, the conventional friction brakes are rarely engaged. This causes brake discs to develop surface rust, particularly in wet climates. After the car sits overnight in rain, the brakes can seize to the pads, causing a loud clunk when first moving. In severe cases, brake pads bond to the discs and require replacement. Volvo changed to a reformulated brake pad compound around 2022 that is more resistant to bonding. Volvo recommends periodic heavy braking with the friction brake to prevent corrosion buildup. Rear brakes tend to wear before fronts on this model. If discs are badly pitted, replacement of discs and pads on one axle costs approximately €200-600 depending on the shop and whether OEM or aftermarket parts are used.

The 12V auxiliary battery can drain if the car is left parked for more than 1-2 weeks without being plugged in, even when the high-voltage battery has charge. This prevents the car from unlocking or starting. The issue is inherited from the C40/XC40 Recharge platform and was particularly common on early models in cold weather. Software updates (version 2.5 and later) improved the 12V charging logic, and keeping the car plugged in when parked now properly maintains the 12V battery via the DC-DC converter. The EC40 ships with these later software versions, reducing the likelihood of this issue. If the 12V battery has been damaged by repeated deep discharges, replacement costs €150-350 including programming. Keeping the car locked when not in use also helps, as the unlocked state keeps more systems active.

The thermal management system uses a multi-function coolant control valve (part 31684222) that directs coolant flow between the battery, motors, and cabin heater. When this valve fails, the most common symptom is sudden loss of cabin heating, often accompanied by a 'Coolant System Service' or 'Propulsion System Service Required' warning. The valve itself costs approximately €250-300, with 1-2 hours of labour. In more serious cases where the high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH) or the electric compressor fails, repair costs can reach €800-1,200 at a dealer. Heat-pump equipped models may also experience intermittent failures that can sometimes be resolved by replacing a single relay (approximately €50-100). This issue affects all CMA-platform EVs, though the EC40's later production date means it may benefit from revised components.

The Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) or Battery Disconnect Unit (BDU) can fail, triggering a 'Propulsion System Service Required' warning and immobilizing the car. The BECM manages the high-voltage battery system, while the BDU handles the large contactors that connect and disconnect the battery. Failure is rare on the EC40 specifically, as the issue was more common on 2021-2022 C40/XC40 Recharge models and was addressed through recall R10078. Combined BECM and BDU replacement costs approximately €4,500-5,000 if out of warranty. However, these components are covered under the 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty, so on used EC40s (2024+), warranty coverage will likely still apply, bringing out-of-pocket cost to zero.
