Volvo's premium estate on the SPA platform, sharing its underpinnings with the S90, V90 Cross Country, and XC90. The T5 is the single-turbo 2.0-litre petrol Drive-E (B4204T) producing 250-254 hp, paired with the Aisin AWF8F35 8-speed automatic and front-wheel drive in most markets. Marketed as a quieter, less complex alternative to the diesel D5 and twincharged T6, the T5 avoids the cost of the PowerPulse system and AdBlue dosing. Production ended in autumn 2025 as Volvo shifted to electrified powertrains.· more· less

Simpler than D5 or T6 variants No DPF or AdBlue complexity
Sensus infotainment freezes Drive-E oil consumption on early units
Buy if: You want a premium estate without diesel emissions hardware, and the car has documented oil-consumption rectification on early production units.
Avoid if: You expect dealer-level repairs to be cheap, or the example shows excessive oil top-ups and a history of Sensus or EPB faults.

Common Problems
Simpler than the diesel siblings, but Sensus and Drive-E details matter
The V90 T5 sidesteps the diesel-side complexity of the D5 (twin-turbo, PowerPulse, DPF, EGR, AdBlue) and the twin-charged headaches of the T6. The petrol Drive-E engine is fundamentally robust, but early-production units suffered piston-ring oil consumption that was addressed by an updated ring design and US extended-coverage program. Real-world weak points are mostly electrical and equipment-driven: Sensus infotainment freezes, EPB actuator faults, tailgate motor and strut wear, and Four-C air suspension if optioned. Verify Sensus is on the latest software, the tailgate operates fully, and oil consumption is within Volvo specification before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Low-pressure fuel pump 15A fuse blowing causing engine stall (2019-2020 V90 T5 models, fuse upgraded to 20A) Verify completed
Airbag deployment characteristics out of specification (production 24 March 2016 to 30 October 2018) Verify completed
Inflatable curtain airbag retaining bolt may break (production 21 November 2016 to 1 March 2017) Verify completed
Vehicle Connectivity Module (VCM) emergency-call location data fault (production 23 September 2016 to 30 October 2018) Verify completed
Front seat rail flange nuts potentially not installed during assembly (2018-2019 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel pump fuse recall is particularly important for 2019-2020 T5 models, as the fault can cause an engine stall at any speed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all V90 T5 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2016-2025 models until 2028-2037
Volvo extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers for out-of-warranty ownership
All V90 T5 models are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty is still active on most production years. Given the Sensus and EPB risk profile, an extended warranty or a pre-purchase inspection by a Volvo specialist is recommended.

Volvo V90 D5 AWD
Volvo V90 D5 AWD 2016-2024
Diesel sibling on the same SPA platform. More torque and AWD but adds twin-turbo, PowerPulse, DPF, EGR, and AdBlue concerns that the T5 avoids entirely.
Volvo S90 D5 AWD
Volvo S90 D5 AWD 2016-2020
Sedan equivalent with the diesel powertrain. Same Sensus and EPB issues but adds the full diesel emissions burden. Slightly cheaper to buy used.
Volvo V60 T5
Volvo V60 T5 2010-2018
Older and smaller estate with the five-cylinder petrol turbo on the P3 platform. More mechanically simple but PCV and coolant hose wear are common.
Volvo XC90 II D5
Volvo XC90 II D5 2015-2020
Same SPA platform in SUV form. Heavier wear on tires and brakes, more frequent air suspension failures, but a more practical seven-seat layout.
Volvo V40 D2
Volvo V40 D2 2012-2019
Much smaller and cheaper Volvo. Lower running costs but no comparable refinement or space. Single-turbo diesel with its own DPF and door-lock concerns.
