The original XC90 was a breakthrough for Volvo when it launched in 2002, combining seven-seat versatility with a strong safety reputation and genuine off-road-capable AWD. The T6 badge covers two distinct inline-six petrol engines: the 2.9-litre twin-turbo B6294T (2003-2006, 272 hp, GM 4-speed automatic) and the 3.2-litre naturally aspirated B6324S (2007-2014, 238 hp, Aisin 6-speed automatic). Both are smooth and refined, but each generation has its own set of known weak points.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but transmission and drivetrain need careful checking
The inline-six engines in both T6 variants are fundamentally robust and can cover well over 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership risks center on the automatic transmissions and AWD components. The 2003-2006 GM 4-speed gearbox is the most problematic, with documented class-action-level failure rates. The 2007-2014 Aisin 6-speed is better but still needs preventive fluid changes that Volvo did not recommend. The angle gear/transfer case is a universal weak point across all Mk1 XC90s. Budget for these drivetrain items when purchasing, and verify their condition during any pre-purchase inspection.
