Audi A4 B9 2.0 TDI

Last updated: February 2026

2015-2023 · EA288 2.0L diesel (150-190 hp)

Premium German sedan with advanced technology and refined interior. The EA288 2.0 TDI engine is significantly more reliable than its EA189 predecessor, but diesel emissions systems require attention. Main concerns: DPF clogging from short trips, AdBlue system failures (especially 2016-2018 models), thermostat housing leaks, and EGR valve carbon buildup. Post-2019 cars benefit from improved AdBlue hardware and updated NOx sensors. Timing belt replacement required every 5 years or 150,000-210,000 km. Not suitable for primarily short-distance urban driving due to DPF regeneration needs.

Reliable with proper maintenance, but diesel systems require attention
The EA288 2.0 TDI is fundamentally robust and capable of 250,000-400,000 km with proper care. However, the emissions systems (DPF, AdBlue, EGR) require regular highway driving and are expensive when they fail. Post-2019 models have significantly improved AdBlue reliability. Not recommended for primarily urban/short-distance driving due to DPF regeneration requirements. Manual transmission versions avoid the DSG's potential mechatronic issues.
