Audi A4 2.0 TDI B9

2015-2024Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2015-2024 · 2.0 TDI EA288 (150-190 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

The fifth-generation A4 pairs the proven EA288 2.0 TDI with the lightweight MLB Evo platform, delivering a refined and efficient executive saloon. Pre-facelift cars (2015-2019) offered 150 hp or 190 hp outputs with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DL382 S tronic. The 2019 facelift rebadged them as 35 TDI (163 hp) and 40 TDI (190 hp), adding mild-hybrid technology. The diesel block itself is robust and regularly exceeds 250,000 km, but the exhaust aftertreatment systems, particularly AdBlue on early models, require attention.

Robust EA288 diesel block Excellent fuel economy for its class
AdBlue failures on 2016-2018 cars DPF clogs easily on short trips
Buy if: You cover regular motorway distances and can verify the AdBlue system history on pre-2019 models.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips under 15 km or want a trouble-free automatic without monitoring gearbox fluid.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel block, but emissions systems and gearbox need monitoring
The EA288 2.0 TDI in the B9 A4 is fundamentally a robust engine that commonly exceeds 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The main risk areas are the diesel emissions components (AdBlue, DPF, EGR) and the S tronic automatic transmission. Early 2016-2018 models have notably more AdBlue system issues than post-2019 facelift cars. Manual gearbox versions are the lowest-risk choice. Cars with complete service history, regular motorway use, and documented S tronic oil changes at 60,000 km intervals are significantly more dependable.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Passenger occupant detection system cable corrosion affecting airbag deployment (2017-2018 models) Verify completed
Seat belt pretensioner may not activate correctly in a collision (selected 2017 models) Verify completed
Belt starter generator moisture ingress causing short circuit and overheating (2017-2020 mild hybrid models) Verify completed
Diesel emissions software update (KBA mandatory recall for certain engine/software combinations) Verify completed
Contact an Audi dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and open service campaigns have been completed. The passenger occupant detection system recall is particularly important for 2017-2018 models as it affects airbag functionality. Diesel models may also be subject to emissions-related KBA recalls.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on all pre-2024 models
Thermostat/water pump extended warranty 8 years from in-service date on some VINs
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all 2014+ models
Audi extended warranty Available through Audi dealers for cars under 10 years / 150,000 km
All used A4 B9 2.0 TDI models from 2015-2023 are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Check with Audi whether the thermostat housing extended warranty applies to your specific VIN, as this can save a significant repair bill. The 12-year rust perforation warranty is still active on all B9 models.
