The front upper control arm ball joints on Model 3 and Model Y are a well-documented weak point. The Performance variant's stiffer suspension and heavier 21-inch wheels accelerate this wear. Symptoms include creaking when steering or clunking over bumps. Tesla frequently offers goodwill repairs (parts only, no labor charge) even outside warranty due to the widespread nature of this issue, making actual owner cost often just €200-400 for parts. Full independent repair with labor runs €600-1,500 per side. Replacement takes approximately 1.5 hours per side. Aftermarket upgraded arms from Unplugged Performance or SuperPro are available and more durable than OEM.

The Tesla heat pump system (introduced on Model Y from launch) uses a complex supermanifold and octovalve to manage thermal energy. Compressor failures are most common on 2021-2022 production cars, with symptoms including no cabin heat, AC failure, or VCFRONT_a531 error codes. Tesla issued a recall for the electronic expansion valve (EXV) software issue on 2020-2022 cars. Full system replacement (compressor + supermanifold + octovalve + refrigerant) can reach €4,000-4,500 out of warranty. Compressor-only replacement runs €2,000-2,500. Later production cars (2023+) have improved reliability. Cold climate use accelerates failure.

Drive unit bearings can develop pitting over time due to the high levels of magnetism in the permanent magnet motors. This manifests as a progressive whine that gets louder, typically noticeable above 80 km/h. The rear drive unit is more commonly affected on Performance models due to higher torque loads. Tesla typically replaces the entire drive unit rather than individual bearings when noise becomes excessive. This is generally covered under the 8-year drivetrain warranty (unlimited km in Europe), but out-of-warranty replacement costs €3,000-4,000. The issue is not safety-critical — the car remains fully functional, just noisier.

Tesla issued a Technical Service Bulletin acknowledging water ingress through the liftgate assembly on 2020-2023 Model Y crossovers. The fix involves resealing the liftgate assembly (approximately 1.8 hours labor) and replacing the liftgate lamp gaskets. Fremont-built cars are more commonly affected than Giga Berlin builds. If caught early, the fix is straightforward and relatively inexpensive. If water damage has affected carpet, wiring, or trim, costs escalate. Tesla has covered this under warranty or goodwill in many cases.

The 12V battery powers auxiliary systems and is a known wear item on all Tesla models. Typical lifespan is 3-5 years. Early Model Y cars used lead-acid 12V batteries; from mid-2022, Tesla switched to lithium-ion 12V batteries which last longer. Failure symptoms include 12V battery needs service warning, inability to open doors, or complete vehicle shutdown. Replacement cost is modest (€100-250 depending on battery type) but the failure can be inconvenient if it happens unexpectedly. Pre-2022 cars with lead-acid batteries are more susceptible.

EVs with strong regenerative braking use their friction brakes much less frequently than ICE cars. On the Model Y Performance with its large 355mm front discs, this means moisture and road salt can cause significant surface corrosion that isn't regularly cleaned off by brake pad contact. The result is uneven disc surfaces that produce vibration and noise when braking hard. The Performance variant's larger discs are more expensive to replace than standard Model Y brakes. Tesla recommends periodic firm braking to clean disc surfaces. In winter climates with salted roads, annual caliper service is recommended. Replacement of all four discs and pads runs €600-1,200 depending on parts quality.

The central touchscreen can develop yellow discoloration along the edges due to UV degradation of the optical bonding adhesive. This is primarily a cosmetic issue but can spread over time. Tesla developed a UV light treatment tool that can reverse early yellowing. Within warranty, Tesla typically replaces the screen. Out of warranty, third-party screen replacements are available for €400-600. Full MCU replacement at Tesla runs €1,000-1,500. This issue has become less common on 2022+ production cars with improved adhesive formulation.
