The fastest variant of the world's best-selling EV crossover. The Model Y Performance combines dual-motor AWD with lowered suspension and 21-inch Uberturbine wheels for a 3.5-second 0-100 km/h time. Built at Fremont (US/early EU deliveries) and Giga Berlin (from March 2022 for Europe), with build quality improving significantly at the Berlin facility. Core EV drivetrain is robust, but consumables (tires, brakes) and suspension components wear faster than on the standard Long Range due to the stiffer setup and heavier wheels.· more· less

Robust electric drivetrain Very low routine maintenance
Expensive 21-inch tire wear Suspension components wear early
Buy if: You want a fast, low-maintenance electric crossover and can budget for expensive tires and occasional suspension work.
Avoid if: You want low running costs — the 21-inch tires and Performance suspension hardware negate much of the EV maintenance advantage.

Common Problems
Reliable drivetrain, but Performance-specific consumables add cost
The Model Y Performance's electric powertrain is fundamentally robust — battery degradation is typically under 10% at 100,000 km, and drive unit failures remain uncommon within the 8-year warranty period. The main ownership risks come from the suspension (control arm ball joints wearing from 40,000 km), the heat pump system (primarily 2021-2022 builds), and the high cost of 21-inch performance tires that last only 25,000-35,000 km on the rear axle. Giga Berlin-built cars (VIN starting with W1) generally have better build quality than Fremont builds.

Warranty Status
Basic vehicle warranty (4 years / 80,000 km) Expired on most 2021 cars, check remaining on 2022-2023
Battery and drive unit (8 years / unlimited km) Active on all Mk1 Performance models, 70% capacity guaranteed
Corrosion perforation (12 years / unlimited km) Active on all current Model Y cars
The 8-year battery and drive unit warranty covers most expensive potential failures (drive unit bearings, battery degradation). Suspension, heat pump, and body hardware are covered only under the 4-year basic warranty. Check remaining basic warranty carefully on 2022-2023 cars.
