Audi's compact electric SUV built on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform, shared with the ID.4 and Cupra Born. The 50 quattro pairs a 150 kW rear motor with a 70 kW front motor for a combined 220 kW (299 hp) and all-wheel drive. Spacious, well-built, and efficient, with a WLTP range of around 490 km. Software maturity has improved significantly since launch, though the infotainment and 12V systems remain the main ownership irritations.

Common Problems
MMI display freezes, goes black, or reboots mid-drive, disabling climate and reversing camera · more· less
The most commonly reported Q4 e-tron issue. The MIB3-based MMI system can freeze, display a black screen, or spontaneously reboot while driving. When this happens, the climate controls, navigation, and reversing camera become unavailable. Early production cars (2021-2022) are most affected. Audi has issued multiple software updates, with version 3.2 (MEB platform version 3.2) being notably more stable. A temporary fix is holding the volume knob for 10-15 seconds to force a reboot. If the MIB3 hardware unit itself fails due to overheating, out-of-warranty replacement costs around €1,200-1,500. Most issues are resolved through free dealer software updates. Cars with software version 3.2 or later are significantly more reliable in this regard.
12V battery drains when parked; 2024+ models affected by DC/DC converter recall (93FR) · more· less
The MEB platform has a known 12V battery management weakness. Early Q4 e-trons (2021-2022) had an undersized 12V battery that could drain within 7-14 days if the car sat unused, causing a complete inability to start. Audi upgraded to an EFB battery from mid-2022. Separately, 2024-2025 models are affected by recall 93FR: condensation inside the Bosch-manufactured onboard charger damages a circuit board, preventing the DC/DC converter from charging the 12V battery. NHTSA estimates 10% of recalled vehicles are affected. The revised part entered production in June 2024 for Audi models. 12V battery replacement costs €200-350. DC/DC converter replacement under recall is free; out of warranty, expect €500-800.
Charge port flap sticks closed due to actuator motor failure from water ingress or corrosion · more· less
Audi technicians describe this as a common issue across the e-tron range. Water intrusion causes corrosion in the actuator motor or connector, preventing the charge port flap from opening. When this happens, charging is impossible until the flap is manually freed. The actuator itself costs around €80 and the port insert about €30, but the labor and the fact that the lock mechanism must be broken to access it raises the total repair to €150-400 depending on the workshop. In cold climates, ice formation worsens the problem. A magnetic charging port cover (around €15-20) can help prevent water ingress. The issue affects all MEB-platform vehicles to some degree.
High-pressure CO2 heat pump loses refrigerant over time, reducing heating efficiency and winter range · more· less
Q4 e-trons equipped with the optional heat pump use an R744 (CO2) system operating at over 100 bar. Small leaks through hose connections are common over time, gradually reducing heating performance and winter range. Note that some Q4 e-trons were delivered without a heat pump due to semiconductor shortages, receiving a resistive heater instead. For cars with the heat pump, the official maintenance interval for R744 refrigerant is 4 years. Recharging costs €130-200, but if seals or hoses need replacement the cost rises to €400-600. Not every workshop has specialist R744 equipment, so this typically requires a dealer visit. Some owners have reported waiting over a year for heat pump parts from Audi.
Metallic knocking from front end over bumps caused by worn anti-roll bar drop links · more· less
A well-documented MEB platform issue that also affects the Q4 e-tron. The front anti-roll bar coupling links develop play, creating a metallic clunk or rattle when driving over bumps and potholes. This typically appears between 15,000-30,000 km. The issue is more pronounced at low temperatures. Audi has released a technical service bulletin. Replacement parts are inexpensive (€30-60 per link), with total repair costing €150-250 at an independent garage or €250-400 at an Audi dealer. Covered under warranty if the car is still within the 2-year period.
Knocking or rattling from the rear, sometimes traced to shock absorbers or subwoofer mounting · more· less
Several Q4 e-tron owners report persistent knocking or rattling noises from the rear end. Diagnosis can be challenging because the source varies: rear shock absorbers, loose subwoofer mounting in the cargo area, or suspension bump stops. In one documented case, Audi attempted to fix the issue 10 times without success, resulting in the car being returned under lemon law. When the cause is the rear shock absorbers, replacement costs €300-800 per pair. If the noise is from the subwoofer mounting, the fix is simpler and cheaper (reseating or adding damping material). This appears to affect a minority of Q4s but can be frustrating to diagnose.
Charging sessions taper prematurely or run well below the rated 125-135 kW, especially in cold weather · more· less
The Q4 50 quattro is rated for 125 kW DC fast charging (135 kW with the 3.2 software update), but many owners report significantly lower speeds in practice, particularly in cold weather. The Q4's battery preconditioning activates only when a fast-charging station is entered in the navigation system — simply driving to a charger without navigation guidance will result in a cold battery and reduced charging speed. Some owners report sessions stalling or producing fault messages at certain public charging networks. In most cases this is a software or protocol issue, not hardware. If the on-board charging inverter fails, replacement costs €400-600. Software updates have progressively improved charging reliability.
Well-built EV with MEB platform software growing pains
The Q4 e-tron 50 quattro benefits from Audi's build quality, achieving a 92% first-time TUV pass rate — above average for the segment. The electric motors and battery pack are mechanically robust, with few catastrophic powertrain failures reported. However, the MEB software platform shared with the VW ID.4 and Cupra Born brings familiar teething problems: infotainment instability, 12V battery management, and charging inconsistencies. Cars built from 2023 onward with software version 3.2+ are notably more stable. The 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty provides good coverage for the most expensive component.
