The second-generation Sharan is a full-size seven-seat MPV with sliding rear doors, sharing its platform with the SEAT Alhambra. The 1.4 TSI petrol was available across the entire 2010-2022 production run, but the engine changed significantly: pre-facelift cars (2010-2015) use the CAVA twincharged unit from the EA111 family (supercharger and turbocharger), while post-2015 models received the CZDA from the EA211 family with a single turbocharger and a timing belt instead of a chain. Both produce 150 hp and pair with either a 6-speed manual or DQ250 wet-clutch DSG.· more· less

Buy if: You want a petrol MPV with seven seats and prefer a post-2015 model with manual gearbox and complete service history.

Common Problems
Reliable petrol option, but pre-2015 chain needs careful checking
The Sharan 1.4 TSI avoids the diesel-specific problems (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) that affect the 2.0 TDI, making it a simpler ownership proposition overall. Post-2015 cars with the CZDA engine and a timing belt are the better choice, as the EA211 is a proven and generally durable unit. Pre-2015 CAVA-engined cars carry a significant timing chain risk that can lead to catastrophic engine damage if neglected. Regardless of year, the electric sliding door mechanism and DSG gearbox (if fitted) remain the main cost concerns beyond the engine. A manual gearbox model without the panoramic sunroof, with documented regular oil changes, represents the lowest-risk purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Starter motor magnetic switch spring incorrectly installed, risk of overheating (2011 production) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator propellant deterioration (2006-2017 production) Verify completed
Airbag control unit capacitor failure (Jan-Dec 2015 production) Verify completed
Front passenger airbag welding defect (Sept-Nov 2016 production) Verify completed
Side airbag gas generator casing defect (various production years) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2011 starter motor recall is safety-critical (fire risk). The Takata airbag recall affects many production years and should be verified on any used Sharan.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Sharan 7N models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ cars
Extended warranty Available through VW dealers, varies by age and mileage
All VW Sharan 7N models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be valid on later production cars. Extended warranty plans are available through VW dealers but typically exclude wear items and pre-existing conditions.

Volkswagen Sharan 2.0 TDI 7N
Volkswagen Sharan 2.0 TDI 7N 2010-2022
Diesel sibling. More economical but adds DPF, EGR, AdBlue, and turbo actuator problems. DSG issues are shared. Overall higher annual risk due to diesel-specific systems.
Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCi Mk1
Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCi Mk1 2006-2015
Sportier driving MPV competitor. Diesel-only with DPF and dual-mass flywheel concerns. PowerShift automatic is less reliable than the Sharan's DSG.
Citroën C4 Picasso 1.2 PureTech Mk2
Citroën C4 Picasso 1.2 PureTech Mk2 2015-2020
Smaller petrol MPV with a known wet timing belt risk on the PureTech engine. Cheaper to buy but five seats only and more electrical gremlins.
SEAT Alhambra Mk1 2.0
SEAT Alhambra Mk1 2.0 2000-2010
Previous-generation MPV with a simple naturally aspirated engine. Rust-prone at this age but mechanically straightforward and cheaper to maintain.
Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv-G GJ
Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv-G GJ 2012-2023
Highly reliable petrol alternative if seven seats are not essential. Much lower running costs and fewer known issues, but only five seats and no sliding doors.
