The diesel version of the third-generation Beetle, sharing the PQ35 platform with the Golf Mk6 and Jetta. The 2.0 TDI engine offers 140 hp (CFFB/CJAA, EA189) on 2012-2014 cars and was updated to the EA288 (CRMB/CUAA, 150 hp) for 2015+ models. Production ran from 2012 to July 2019 with no successor planned. Most 2012-2015 cars were affected by the dieselgate emissions scandal and received a software fix.· more· less

Buy if: You want a characterful diesel coupe that drives long distances and can verify the dieselgate fix and timing belt service have been done.
Avoid if: You drive mostly short urban trips, which destroys DPFs and EGR systems on this engine.

Common Problems
Reliable on long-distance use, problematic for city driving
The Beetle 2.0 TDI is a sound choice if it suits your usage. The EA189/EA288 engine is well understood and parts are widely available through the VW Group network. However, the diesel-specific systems (DPF, EGR, injectors) are vulnerable on short-trip cars. Dieselgate-affected models received an emissions software update that some owners blame for increased EGR-related failures. Verify the timing belt service history, look for evidence of long highway driving, and inspect for the common Beetle window regulator and trim faults.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Dieselgate emissions software fix (2012-2015 EA189 engines) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2012-2019 models) Critical - verify completed
Key removal with shift lever not in Park (2012-2019 automatic models) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The dieselgate emissions fix is mandatory in most European markets — cars without it may fail technical inspection. The Takata airbag recall affects all model years and should be confirmed completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Beetles
Dieselgate goodwill (Trust Building Measure) Expired (was 2 years / 250,000 km after fix)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
All used Beetle TDIs are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The dieselgate Trust Building Measure goodwill warranty (covering specific emissions-related components for 2 years or 250,000 km after the fix) has now expired on all cars. Rust perforation warranty may still cover newer examples.
