First-generation seven-seater MPV, jointly developed with Volkswagen and Ford and built in Palmela, Portugal. Shares its platform and most mechanical parts with the VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy. The 2.0 8v petrol is the simplest and most accessible engine choice: naturally aspirated, no turbo, no DPF, and easy to work on, though it feels underpowered moving a fully-loaded MPV. Most surviving examples are 15-25 years old, so condition matters far more than mileage.· more· less

Buy if: You want a cheap, practical seven-seater with a simple engine you can maintain on a small budget and you accept that bodywork condition is the main risk.
Avoid if: You regularly carry a full load of passengers (the 2.0 petrol is sluggish) or you are unwilling to inspect underneath thoroughly for corrosion.

Common Problems
Mechanically simple but condition-driven
The 2.0 8v itself is one of the simpler engines VW group ever built and can comfortably reach 250,000 km with regular oil changes and timing-belt services. The risk on a Mk1 Alhambra is almost entirely down to age and condition, not engine design. A careful underbody inspection, a sliding-door function test and documented timing-belt history matter more than the engine itself.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Side airbag gas canister (limited 2015 build window — applies more to Mk2 but verify) Verify if applicable
The Mk1 Alhambra has had very few recalls over its lifetime. Contact a SEAT dealer with the VIN to verify any historical campaigns have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 Alhambras
Rust perforation warranty Expired (typically 12 years from registration)
Extended warranty availability Limited — most third-party warranties exclude cars over 15 years old
All Mk1 Alhambras are well outside any factory warranty. Given the age, an inspection by a VW group specialist is far better value than any extended warranty product.

Newer generation with more modern diesel. Better refinement and economy but adds DPF, EGR and DSG concerns absent on the Mk1 petrol.
Volkswagen Sharan 7N 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Sharan 7N 2.0 TDI 2010-2022
Mechanical twin of the Mk2 Alhambra. Same platform-shared sliding door issues but the modern 2.0 TDI brings turbo, DPF and dual-mass flywheel costs.
Volkswagen Golf Mk4 1.6
Volkswagen Golf Mk4 1.6 1997-2003
Same era VW group simple petrol. Similar age-related issues (rust, electrics) but a much smaller, lighter car so wear and consumables are cheaper.
Volkswagen Passat B7 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Passat B7 2.0 TDI 2010-2014
Newer, more refined family car with modern diesel. Better economy than the Alhambra petrol but a lot less interior space and seven-seat flexibility.
SEAT Leon Mk2 1.9 TDI
SEAT Leon Mk2 1.9 TDI 2005-2012
Cheaper to run if you do not need seven seats. The PD 1.9 TDI is robust but has its own injector and DMF concerns the simple Alhambra 2.0 petrol does not.
