The 16V version of the Mk2 GTI was the range-topper when it launched in 1986, adding a twin-cam 16-valve head to the proven 1.8-litre block. With 139 hp (129 hp in catalyst-equipped markets), it offered a noticeable step up in performance over the 112 hp 8V model. All European-market 16V cars used the KR engine code with K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection. Now firmly established as a collectible classic, good examples regularly sell for more than the 8V equivalent. Parts availability remains excellent thanks to specialist suppliers and a dedicated enthusiast community.· more· less

Common Problems
Mechanically robust, but age and injection complexity demand specialist care
The KR 16V engine is well regarded for its durability and many examples have exceeded 200,000 km without major issues. The stronger diesel-derived oil pump is an advantage over the 8V. However, the K-Jetronic injection system is more complex and specialist-dependent than the Digifant found on later 8V models, and the 16V head is more expensive to rebuild when valve guides eventually wear. As with the 8V, structural rust and age-related wiring degradation are the primary ownership challenges. Buying a structurally sound car with documented history is far more important than low mileage.
