The most serious issue with the CAVE/CTHE twincharger engine. The original piston rings were too thin and allowed oil past the cylinder walls. Carbon deposits then bake the rings further, creating a worsening cycle. In severe cases, piston ring lands crack entirely, leading to catastrophic oil consumption exceeding 1 litre per 1,000 km. VW considers up to 0.5 litres per 1,000 km 'acceptable', but this level already indicates a developing problem. CAVE engines (pre-September 2012) are worst affected, with forum reports suggesting the majority of early cars experienced this to some degree. CTHE engines (from mid-2012) received revised pistons that improved but did not eliminate the problem. Cylinder 3 typically fails first. Repair requires a full engine top-end rebuild with upgraded pistons and rings, costing €3,000-4,500 at a specialist, or €5,000-7,000 at a VW dealer including labor. VW ran a service campaign for affected cars under warranty but many are now out of coverage.

The EA111 timing chain tensioner has a design flaw where the one-way check valve weakens over time, allowing oil pressure to bleed off overnight. This causes the chain to go slack and rattle on cold start. If ignored, the chain can skip teeth and cause valve-to-piston contact, destroying the engine. VW issued TPI 15D8 with an improved tensioner design, now on its fifth revision. Typical failure occurs between 60,000 and 100,000 km, though some reports exist as early as 30,000 km. The complete kit (chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets, and a new camshaft with integrated sprocket) costs €1,200-1,500 at an independent specialist, or €1,800-2,500 at a VW dealer. If the chain has already jumped, engine damage pushes costs to €4,000-6,000 for a rebuild.

The Polo GTI 6R was available with the DQ200 7-speed DSG automatic, which is the dry-clutch variant known for reliability issues. The mechatronic unit's valve body casting is too thin, which can split and cause loss of hydraulic pressure. Solenoid failures from oil contamination are also common. Symptoms include jerky low-speed shifts, gear selection errors (cannot select reverse or 6th gear), and warning lights. Problems typically appear between 40,000 and 80,000 km. A mechatronic unit repair or rebuild costs €1,000-1,800, while a complete gearbox replacement can reach €3,000-3,500. Cars with manual gearbox do not have this issue and are significantly more reliable. Older cars paired with DSG now likely need a second mechatronic unit by 100,000 km.

The supercharger is driven by the water pump via an electromagnetic clutch. On 2010-2011 cars, this clutch used an inferior material that wore prematurely, causing a squeaking or ticking noise and the supercharger failing to engage at low rpm. The result is noticeable loss of power below 3,000 rpm and potential fault codes P10AA and P2262. VW released an updated water pump with improved clutch material from late 2011 onwards. The fix involves replacing the water pump assembly, costing €400-600 at an independent shop or €700-900 at a VW dealer. Later production cars (2012+) with the upgraded part are less likely to be affected.

As with all direct-injection engines, the 1.4 TSI accumulates carbon deposits on the back of the intake valves because fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder rather than over the valves. Symptoms include rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, and gradually declining performance, typically noticeable after 60,000-80,000 km. The issue is exacerbated on the CAVE/CTHE engines by the oil consumption problem, as oil vapour entering through the PCV system accelerates carbon buildup. Walnut blasting to clean the valves costs €400-600, with full intake manifold removal and cleaning reaching €600-800. Regular spirited driving and quality oil help delay but do not prevent this issue.

Early 2009-2010 production cars had injectors with a narrow spray pattern that caused incomplete combustion under high load. These injectors also dripped fuel after engine shutdown, washing the oil film from cylinder walls and accelerating piston ring and bore wear. A mid-2010 revision introduced wider-pattern injectors that improved combustion but could extinguish the spark plug at high fueling events due to the proximity of injector and plug. Replacement injectors cost €80-120 each (four required), with labor adding €200-400. Upgraded NGK Iridium spark plugs (BRK7EIX) help mitigate misfire issues but may cause slightly rough idle when cold.

Under dynamic launches or hard acceleration, the engine moves significantly on its mounts. The bolt on the right-side engine mount (near the coolant reservoir) can shear due to repeated stress. This is more common on cars that are driven hard or have been remapped. Symptoms include excessive engine movement visible when blipping the throttle with the bonnet open, and a knocking sound under acceleration. The OEM mount and bolt cost approximately €60-100, with labor around €100-200. Upgraded mounts from the Polo R WRC or aftermarket polyurethane options prevent recurrence.
