2010-2014 · 1.4 TSI EA111 Twincharger (180 hp) supercharged + turbocharged petrol

The Polo GTI 6R packs a unique twincharged 1.4 TSI engine combining a supercharger for low-end response with a turbocharger for top-end power. It offers genuine hot hatch performance in a compact, well-built package. However, the CAVE/CTHE engine is one of VW's more problematic units, with piston ring failures, timing chain tensioner issues, and oil consumption widely reported across forums and specialist workshops.

Known piston ring/oil consumption issues Timing chain tensioner prone to failure
Buy if: You find a late CTHE-engined car (mid-2012 onwards) with documented oil consumption history, manual gearbox, and a compression test on file.
Avoid if: You cannot budget for potential engine work or the car has a CAVE engine with unknown oil consumption history.

Common Problems
Problematic twincharger engine requires careful pre-purchase inspection
The 1.4 TSI twincharger is one of VW's more troublesome engine designs. The CAVE variant (2010-2012) has widespread piston ring and oil consumption issues that can lead to engine rebuild or replacement. The later CTHE revision (from mid-2012) improved the pistons but did not fully resolve the problem. The timing chain tensioner is another well-documented weak point across both variants. Cars with the DQ200 DSG add further risk. A thorough pre-purchase inspection including compression test, oil consumption history check, and cold-start chain noise assessment is essential. Budget for at least one significant repair during ownership.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2010-2015 production, campaign 69Q7) Verify completed
Airbag accelerator sensor fault causing incorrect deployment (Feb 2014 - Aug 2014) Verify completed
Airbag gas generator welding defect (2013 production) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is the most widespread and affects nearly all 2010-2015 production vehicles. Note that the piston ring service campaign was not an official recall but a goodwill repair under warranty — most cars are now outside this coverage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Polo GTI 6R models
Piston ring service campaign Was handled under warranty, now expired
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2013-2014 models until 2025-2026
All Polo GTI 6R models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The piston ring service campaign for CAVE engines was handled as goodwill during the warranty period and is no longer available. Third-party warranties are available but may exclude pre-existing conditions like oil consumption.
