The first-generation Touareg (7L) shares its platform with the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. The 3.2 VR6 petrol was the base engine, offering 220 hp and a smooth, refined character. Paired with an Aisin 6-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive, it is a surprisingly capable machine both on and off road. Fuel consumption is high for the output, averaging 13-15 litres per 100 km in mixed driving.· more· less

Buy if: You want a capable full-size SUV with a smooth petrol V6 and can accept high fuel costs and budget for air suspension and drivetrain maintenance.
Avoid if: You need low running costs, plan mostly short urban trips, or cannot tolerate potentially expensive surprise bills from air suspension, timing chain, or gearbox repairs.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but platform complexity drives running costs
The 3.2 VR6 engine itself is a well-proven unit with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. The main ownership risks come from the platform rather than the engine: air suspension, the Aisin 6-speed gearbox valve body, propshaft centre bearing, and the fact that timing chain replacement requires engine removal. Later production models (2006+) benefited from updated stepper motors and improved manufacturing quality. A car with documented service history, regular gearbox fluid changes, and a recently addressed propshaft bearing is significantly lower risk. Avoid cars that have been sitting for extended periods, as air suspension seals dry out and batteries drain.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel filter flange cracking risk (2004-2007 petrol models, recall 20Ai) Verify completed
Fuel filter flange cracking risk (2007-2010 models, recall 20Z4) Verify completed
Steering shaft bolted connection (various production dates) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various production dates) Verify completed
Transfer case stepper motor software update (2003-2005 models) Verify if applicable
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel filter flange recalls are particularly important as cracking can cause fuel leaks and fire risk. The transfer case stepper motor was addressed by a revised motor (part number suffix C) and software update on early production models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Touareg Mk1 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models
Extended warranty availability Very limited due to vehicle age
All Touareg 7L models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty coverage for vehicles of this age is extremely difficult to obtain. Budget for self-funded repairs.
