2019-2024 · 1.5 TSI EVO (150 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol with ACT cylinder deactivation

Volkswagen's compact seven-seat MPV built on the MQB platform, sharing its underpinnings with the Golf Mk7/Mk8. The 1.5 TSI EVO is the only petrol option in the facelift Touran and comes exclusively with the DQ200 7-speed DSG. With cylinder deactivation, it delivers reasonable fuel economy for a seven-seater, though the engine's low-RPM hesitation and DSG quirks are well documented across the Volkswagen Group range.

Spacious, flexible seven-seat interior Efficient engine with low fuel costs
DSG-only adds gearbox risk Low-RPM hesitation when cold
Buy if: You need a practical seven-seater with petrol power and can verify the DSG software has been updated and the cold-start hesitation fix has been applied.
Avoid if: You primarily do short urban trips (GPF clogging, ACT carbon buildup) or want a manual gearbox option.

Common Problems
Decent reliability but DSG and engine quirks need monitoring
The 1.5 TSI EVO engine is fundamentally solid and an improvement over the earlier 1.2/1.4 TSI units. The main ownership concerns are the well-documented cold-start hesitation (mostly addressed via software), the DQ200 DSG requiring proper maintenance, and gradual carbon buildup inherent to direct injection. Post-2020 production cars with the latest software updates are generally better sorted. Regular highway driving and timely DSG fluid changes significantly reduce risk.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering belt pulley retaining ring may not be fully engaged (2019 models) Verify completed
Brake pedal plate welding defect - pedal may detach under sudden braking (June-August 2020 production) Critical - verify completed
Fuel tank wall thickness below specification (2019 models, also 2022 corrosion-related) Verify completed
Engine hesitation software update (all 1.5 TSI models, February 2020 campaign) Verify applied
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and software campaigns have been completed. The brake pedal recall for June-August 2020 production vehicles is particularly safety-critical.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on most used examples
Paint warranty (3 years) Expired on 2019-2022 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active until 2031-2036 depending on build date
Water pump extended warranty 8 years / 130,000 km in some markets - check with VW
All pre-2024 Tourans are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year anti-perforation warranty remains active on all current used examples. Check whether the water pump extended warranty applies in your market.
