The premium petrol option in VW's first-generation MPV. The Sharan Mk1 was a joint project with Ford and SEAT, sharing its platform with the Galaxy and Alhambra. The 2.8 VR6 offered smooth six-cylinder power in two forms: a 174 hp 12-valve (AAA code, 1995-2000) and a 204 hp 24-valve (AYL code, 2000-2010), both paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. Available with Syncro or 4MOTION all-wheel drive on select variants. Durable engine in an aging, rust-prone body
The VR6 engine itself is one of Volkswagen's most durable petrol units and regularly reaches 200,000+ km with proper maintenance. The main ownership risks are not the engine but the vehicle around it: structural corrosion, aging cooling system components, and the automatic gearbox (if fitted). Manual gearbox examples with a rust-free underside and documented service history are the safest purchase. Budget for a preventive cooling system overhaul and a thorough underside inspection before committing.
