The Golf Mk4 V5 offered something unusual in the compact class: a five-cylinder engine. The 2.3-litre VR5, available as the 150 hp AGZ (10-valve, 1997-2001) and the 170 hp AQN (20-valve, 2000-2003), provides a smooth, characterful power delivery that sits between the mundane 2.0 and the hot-hatch GTI. The Mk4 platform brought a notable step up in build quality, and the V5 was typically ordered with higher trim levels. With all examples now over 20 years old, age-related issues (rust, electrical faults, worn rubber components) affect every survivor, and the V5-specific timing chain job and five ignition coils add complexity over the standard four-cylinder models.· more· less

Common Problems
Characterful engine on an aging platform
The V5 engine itself is reasonably robust, with the bottom end capable of exceeding 250,000 km when properly maintained. The main concerns are the expensive timing chain replacement (an engine-out job), age-related issues common to all 20+ year old Mk4 Golfs (rust, electrics, worn plastics), and the Jatco automatic gearbox if equipped. The 20-valve AQN (170 hp) is generally considered the more refined unit. Manual gearbox V5 models are simpler to maintain. Budget for age-related repairs and inspect thoroughly for rust before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2000-2004 production models) Verify with VIN
Fuel pump relay wiring (selected 1998-2002 models) Verify with VIN
Due to the age of these vehicles, recall records may be incomplete. Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify whether any outstanding recalls apply. The Takata airbag campaign is particularly important to confirm on pre-2005 models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk4 V5 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk4 V5 models
All Golf Mk4 V5 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. No manufacturer-backed extended warranty programs are available for vehicles of this age. Third-party warranties may be available but often exclude cars over 15 years old.

Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Mk4
Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Mk4 1997-2003
Simpler 4-cylinder engine with significantly cheaper parts and maintenance. Uses a timing belt instead of chain, so no engine-out risk.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk4
Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk4 1998-2004
The 1.8T offers more tuning potential but adds turbo and oil sludge risks. Coil pack issues are shared across both engines.
Volkswagen Golf 2.0 Mk4
Volkswagen Golf 2.0 Mk4 1998-2004
The 2.0 8V is the most reliable Mk4 petrol engine. Simpler, cheaper to run, but lacks the V5's character.
Volkswagen Golf VR6 Mk3
Volkswagen Golf VR6 Mk3 1992-1998
Shares the VR engine family concept. The 2.8 VR6 has similar timing chain concerns but a larger, more robust bottom end.
Volkswagen Golf R32 Mk5
Volkswagen Golf R32 Mk5 2005-2008
The VR6 successor with AWD. Timing chain is equally expensive, and Haldex system adds further complexity and cost.
