1997-2003 · 2.3 VR5 (150-170 hp) 5-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol (AGZ/AQN)
The Golf Mk4 V5 offered something unusual in the compact class: a five-cylinder engine. The 2.3-litre VR5, available as the 150 hp AGZ (10-valve, 1997-2001) and the 170 hp AQN (20-valve, 2000-2003), provides a smooth, characterful power delivery that sits between the mundane 2.0 and the hot-hatch GTI. The Mk4 platform brought a notable step up in build quality, and the V5 was typically ordered with higher trim levels. With all examples now over 20 years old, age-related issues (rust, electrical faults, worn rubber components) affect every survivor, and the V5-specific timing chain job and five ignition coils add complexity over the standard four-cylinder models.· more· less
