The first diesel Golf arrived in September 1976, making it one of the earliest diesel-powered compact cars in Europe. The 1,471 cc CK engine was adapted from the EA827 Audi petrol block with reinforced internals to handle diesel compression. With just 50 hp, performance is modest, but fuel consumption of around 6.5 L/100 km was remarkable for the era. Mechanically straightforward with a Bosch mechanical injection pump and no electronics to speak of, these cars reward hands-on owners who understand simple diesel engines.· more· less

Common Problems
Rust is the primary threat; diesel mechanicals are simple but age-sensitive
The CK 1.5-litre diesel is mechanically straightforward with no ignition system and no carburetor to maintain. However, the block is more crack-prone than the later 1.6 diesel, and the Bosch injection pump requires specialist knowledge when it needs attention. At 45+ years old, corrosion is by far the biggest ownership concern. The glow plug system, wiring, and head gasket round out the main worry areas. Parts availability is good through the active classic VW community and specialists like Heritage Parts Centre.
