The Polo Mk3 with the 1.9 SDI is an old-school naturally aspirated diesel with no turbo and no particulate filter, designed purely for economy. The AEY/ASY engine uses a Bosch mechanical injection pump and produces just 64 hp, making it slow but extremely frugal, returning around 5 litres per 100 km with ease. Owners frequently describe these as nearly indestructible if maintained, with several documented examples exceeding 200,000 km. The 6N2 facelift (1999 onwards) brought a fully galvanised body and improved interior.· more· less

Engine nearly indestructible Very low fuel consumption
Rust on older 6N1 bodies Extremely slow (64 hp)
Buy if: You want the cheapest possible diesel motoring with minimal mechanical risk and are willing to accept glacial performance.

Common Problems
Mechanically very robust, but age and rust are the real enemies
The 1.9 SDI engine is widely regarded as one of VW's most durable powertrains. With no turbo, no DPF, no complex electronics, and a simple mechanical injection pump, there is very little to go wrong mechanically. Multiple owners report trouble-free running past 200,000 km. The main ownership risks are age-related: structural rust (especially on pre-1999 6N1 bodies), deteriorating electrical connections, and worn rubber seals and bushes. A well-maintained 6N2 with a solid body can provide years of inexpensive transport.

Seatbelt anchorage points - mounting bolts may not meet torque specification (selected 1994-1999 production) Verify completed
Due to the age of these vehicles, recall records may be incomplete. Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Most 6N/6N2 Polos will have had any applicable recalls addressed during their lifetime, but verification is still recommended.
