2012-2016Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2012-2016 · 1.2 TSI EA111 CBZB (105 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol

The entry-level petrol engine for the A5 Beetle, this 1.2 TSI uses the older EA111 family (CBZB code) rather than the improved EA211 that reached other VW models from 2014 onwards. It is a torquey and reasonably economical commuter engine that works well with the Beetle's modest weight, and parts availability across the Volkswagen Group is excellent. Manual-gearbox cars are more widespread than DSG variants in the Beetle range.

Cheap VW Group parts Decent torque for city use
EA111 timing chain weakness DQ200 DSG unreliable (if equipped)
Buy if: You want an affordable, characterful Beetle with a manual gearbox and can confirm the timing chain has been replaced with the updated kit.
Avoid if: You are looking at a DSG automatic, or hear any rattle on cold start indicating timing chain stretch.

Common Problems
EA111 engine needs careful inspection before purchase
The 1.2 TSI in the A5 Beetle is the older EA111 variant, which carries the well-known timing chain stretch risk. A cold-start test and documented chain-replacement history are the single most important checks before buying. If the chain has already been done with the updated kit and the car has a manual gearbox, it can be a reasonable and cheap-to-run small petrol. DSG cars and cars without chain history are significantly higher risk and should be priced accordingly.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2012-2019 models) Critical - verify completed
Timing chain service action TPI 15D8 (if not already applied) Verify with VW dealer using VIN
Fuel line to fuel rail leak (certain 2013-2014 production) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service actions have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is critical. The timing chain service action is not a full recall but any goodwill or extended coverage should be documented.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Beetles
Timing chain goodwill / extended coverage Case-by-case — check with VW using VIN
DQ200 DSG extended warranty (some markets) Up to 5 years / 150,000 km (if applicable)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on later-production cars
All A5 Beetles are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Timing chain coverage and DSG extended warranty have been applied on a goodwill basis in some VW markets. Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to check whether any coverage remains.

↔ Also consider

Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 TSI A5 2012-2019 Same body and platform but with the more powerful EA888 engine. Better timing chain design on 2014+ (Gen 3) but higher running costs overall. Volkswagen Golf Mk6 1.2 TSI 2009-2013 Mechanically identical EA111 engine, same timing chain weakness. Golf has more practical packaging and tends to have better service history records. Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI 6R 2009-2014 Same EA111 engine in a smaller body. Identical timing chain and DSG concerns. Cheaper to buy and run due to smaller tire and brake sizes. SEAT Ibiza Mk4 1.2 TSI 2010-2017 Pre-2015 cars share the EA111 engine with the same issues. Later cars with EA211 are significantly more reliable but cost more. Mini Cooper F56 2014-2024 Similar retro-styled compact with a 3-cylinder turbo. Different weak points (timing chain, water pump) and higher dealer servicing costs.
