Volkswagen's seven-seat compact MPV on the MQB platform, sharing its mechanical foundations with the Golf Mk7. The 2.0 TDI EA288 is the engine of choice for families needing torque and fuel economy. Offered with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG (DQ381 wet-clutch from late 2018), the 2.0 produces higher exhaust temperatures than the 1.6 TDI, making DPF regeneration more reliable on mixed driving. Production ended in April 2026.· more· less

Strong 2.0 TDI with proven durability Better DPF health than 1.6 TDI variant
EGR and AdBlue system complexity Dual-mass flywheel wear from MPV weight
Buy if: You need a practical seven-seater for regular mixed driving, ideally with a manual gearbox and complete service history showing timing belt status.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips under 15 km (DPF and EGR clogging), or the service history is incomplete with no timing belt records.

Common Problems
Mechanically durable diesel, but emissions system needs attention
The EA288 2.0 TDI is a proven engine that regularly exceeds 250,000 km with proper maintenance. Its higher exhaust temperatures compared to the 1.6 TDI make DPF health less of a concern on mixed driving. The main ownership risks revolve around the emissions system (EGR valve, DPF, AdBlue), the very common P2015 intake manifold fault (cheap to fix), and DMF wear on manual gearbox cars. The DQ381 wet-clutch DSG on post-2018 models is notably more reliable than the DQ200 used on the 1.6 TDI. Manual gearbox versions with regular highway driving represent the most predictable ownership experience.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Timing belt tensioner roller (EA288 engines built before October 2016) - sand ingress can cause tensioner squeaking and potential failure Verify completed
Panoramic sunroof LED ambient lighting short circuit risk (April 2015 - July 2018 production) Verify completed
Brake pedal plate welding defect - pedal may detach under sudden braking (June-August 2020 production) Critical - verify completed
Rear wheel bearing housing defect - blowholes can cause bearing failure (2023 production) Verify completed
Airbag initiator mixture ratio deviation (2016-2017 production) Verify completed
Fuel tank wall thickness below specification from corrosion (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The brake pedal recall for June-August 2020 production vehicles is safety-critical. The timing belt tensioner recall is important for pre-October 2016 cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on most used examples
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active until 2027-2038 depending on build date
Extended warranty Available through VW dealers and third-party providers
All pre-2024 Tourans are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. VW's 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all current used examples. For diesel purchases, an extended warranty covering the turbocharger, DSG gearbox (if equipped), and emissions system components is worth considering.

↔ Also consider

Volkswagen Touran 5T 1.6 TDI
Volkswagen Touran 5T 1.6 TDI 2015-2020
Same body, smaller engine. Lower exhaust temp makes DPF clogging worse. Uses problematic DQ200 dry-clutch DSG if automatic. The 2.0 TDI is the better choice for mixed driving.
Volkswagen Golf Mk7 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Golf Mk7 2.0 TDI 2012-2020
Same EA288 engine in a lighter body. Identical EGR and DPF issues. Golf puts less stress on the dual-mass flywheel and brakes. Lower running costs overall.
Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI
Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 2016-present
Similar EA288 reliability profile with seven-seat option. Heavier body adds similar DMF stress. AdBlue and EGR concerns are shared.
Volkswagen Sharan Mk2 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Sharan Mk2 2.0 TDI 2010-2022
Larger MPV with sliding doors. More powerful 2.0 TDI handles DPF well but adds electric door motor failures and higher running costs.
Volkswagen Tiguan Mk2 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Tiguan Mk2 2.0 TDI 2016-present
Same MQB platform and EA288 engine in SUV form. Similar EGR, DPF, and AdBlue issues. Higher ride height adds no mechanical difference.
