The original Golf replaced the Beetle and redefined the compact car segment from 1974 onwards. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder (engine codes EW, FR, EG) was the mid-range engine in the lineup, producing 75 to 85 hp depending on the variant. Mechanically straightforward with a timing belt, carburetor or Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and a simple 4- or 5-speed manual gearbox, the Mk1 earned its reputation through sheer simplicity. Today it carries Oldtimer (H-Kennzeichen) status in Germany, which brings tax and insurance benefits.· more· less

Common Problems
Rust is the biggest threat; mechanicals are simple and cheap to fix
The Golf Mk1 1.6 engine is fundamentally robust and can last well beyond 200,000 km with basic maintenance. The real ownership challenge at 40+ years old is corrosion. Virtually every surviving car has had rust repair, and ongoing protection is essential. The carburetor, ignition system, and wiring are the next tier of concerns, but all are well-understood problems with proven solutions and strong parts availability from the classic VW community.
