Volkswagen's seven-seat compact MPV on the MQB platform, sharing underpinnings with the Golf Mk7. The 1.4 TSI EA211 (engine codes CZCA 125 hp and CZDA 150 hp) is a significant improvement over the earlier EA111 1.4 TSI, switching to a timing belt with a 200,000+ km service interval and resolving the chain-stretch problem. Replaced by the 1.5 TSI EVO in the 2018 facelift.· more· less

EA211 fixes chain-stretch issue Strong fuel economy, 6.5-7.5 l/100 km
DQ200 DSG unreliable (if equipped) Plastic thermostat/water pump leaks
Buy if: You want a practical seven-seat MPV with a refined petrol engine, ideally with a manual gearbox and documented cooling system replacement.
Avoid if: You are considering a DSG automatic without documented mechatronic service, or only drive short urban trips (carbon buildup risk).

Common Problems
Improved engine, but DSG and cooling system still need attention
The EA211 1.4 TSI is significantly more reliable than the EA111 it replaced, with the timing chain issue resolved by switching to a long-life belt. Main ownership concerns are the plastic cooling components, the DQ200 dry-clutch DSG on automatic models, and carbon buildup from direct injection. Manual gearbox versions with regular highway driving represent the safest purchases. Replaced by the 1.5 TSI EVO in the 2018 facelift.
