The Golf Mk2 1.6 TD brought turbocharged diesel economy to a practical family hatchback at a time when most diesel cars felt agricultural. The earlier JR engine produces 70 hp, while the later SB intercooled variant (GTD badge, from 1989) delivers 80 hp. Both use a Bosch VE mechanical injection pump and indirect injection (IDI) with pre-chambers. Over 30 years old now, these are firmly classic cars. Mechanically straightforward with strong aftermarket parts support, but structural corrosion is the defining ownership challenge on any surviving example.· more· less

Structural rust on most survivors Injection pump rebuilds are costly
Buy if: You want a practical classic diesel with low fuel consumption, simple mechanicals, and a strong enthusiast community, and can find a structurally sound example.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect for hidden structural corrosion, have no access to a diesel injection specialist, or need a modern level of daily driving reliability.

Common Problems
Rust is the decisive factor, mechanicals are straightforward
The 1.6 TD engine itself is a proven and simple unit with strong parts availability. The Bosch VE injection pump, turbocharger, and glow plug system are the main mechanical concerns, but all are well-understood and rebuildable. The real ownership risk is structural corrosion: at 33-42 years old, virtually every surviving Mk2 has some degree of rust. Buying on condition rather than mileage is essential. A sound body with a tired engine is a better starting point than a running car with hidden structural rot.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
No formal recalls are actively tracked for Golf Mk2 1.6 TD models in European databases due to the vehicle's age (35+ years) Not applicable
Given the age of the Golf Mk2 (1984-1991 production), no active recalls are tracked in European safety databases. Any original recalls from the 1980s-1990s would have been completed decades ago. Focus inspection on the car's current mechanical and structural condition rather than recall history.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Golf Mk2s (30+ years ago)
Rust perforation warranty Expired (originally 6 years)
Classic car specialist warranty Some specialists offer 6-12 month warranties on specific rebuild work
All Golf Mk2 models are far outside any original factory warranty. When purchasing rebuilt or reconditioned components (injection pumps, turbochargers, gearboxes), verify what warranty the rebuilder provides. Bosch-authorised injection pump rebuilders typically offer 12 months.
